We recently connected with Jennifer Cuevas and have shared our conversation below.
Jennifer, appreciate you joining us today. What did your parents do right and how has that impacted you in your life and career?
The number one thing I can say with conviction that my parents did right, is that they both supported me with zero hesitation. What ever my heart desired, or which ever life path I chose to take, they both gave me their unwavering support. When I doubted myself in starting a business, they both encouraged me to go for it. They both reassured, supported and guided me when I really needed it.
I don’t even think they realize how much their support meant to me in those moments. They both just gave me their positive energy without even realizing they were doing so. I will forever be grateful to them.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Hi everyone! My name is Jenn Cuevas, I am a stay-at-home mama to my three beautiful babies and wife to the world’s best husband!
Ever since I can remember, I’ve loved all things beauty. From changing my clothes seven times a day (sorry Mom), always doing something different to my hair, and practicing doing makeup technique’s, I have always had a passion for beauty. (I actually get the love for beauty from my Mom! If you know, you know!) Fast forward to adulthood, my husband, being the good man he is, has encouraged me to start my makeup business. But I always doubted myself. I always doubted whether or not I could do it, or if I could deliver in the way I would expect myself to. The big question was, what if I failed? I don’t know if I could handle that level of disappointment in myself.
A little over one year ago, I took the leap of complete faith in starting my makeup business. I literally sat on my couch, made a random Facebook post advertising myself (because if I put it on social media, I can’t take it back, right?!) Honestly, I couldn’t be more proud of myself! I have become licensed, obtained my LLC and this has opened so many doors for me, that I can’t help but think it was fate. I was meant to be here!
Don’t get me wrong! There have been many moments of doubt, conflict and overthinking that made me question if I could do this- but with the support of my husband, family and close friends, I have very little room to ever let doubt cloud my mind. I couldn’t be more grateful to them.
For my makeup artistry, I specialize in more of a soft/ full glam service. A makeup look that enhances your beauty with neutral tones. I provide makeup services for any event, photo-shoot, and my favorite- Bridal makeup! My favorite moment is when I give a client a mirror (after services) and they’re in complete shock (or even come to tears)! Seeing themselves in the mirror and seeing how beautiful they are, seeing them overwhelmed with emotion, makes me feel that this line of work is much bigger than me. Can you just imagine how humbling it is to know that I provide a service that makes women feel beautiful?
I am most proud of the example that I am setting for my children. Letting them see that they have the capacity and support to start their own business no matter where they are in life. They can be their own boss. They can be a business owner and still be a good person with values and integrity. And for my daughters, they can have it all, too! They can be the wife, the mom and the boss.
I would love for my client’s to know that this business is so personal for me. I was made fun of and bullied as a kid based on my looks. I didn’t really appreciate my own beauty until a few years ago. So this business is NOT about the money, not the followers, etc. But me being part of your special day(s) to help you feel beautiful, means the absolute world to me. If I can give you the reassurance I needed when I was a kid, that is what brings me joy.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
Being a business owner, mom and wife, it was an adjustment and quite the balancing act. I was hyper focused on building my brand. I was on my phone more than I wanted to be. I was focused on inquiries, scheduling appointments and my time was stretched with managing my home and kids. I had to re-learn my purpose of this business. I started this business to work with MY schedule, not me working against my own time.
Once I set boundaries for my business and took necessary adjustments to manage my time, I felt a huge weight lifted off my shoulders.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Practice, Consistent Content, Gratitude and Values.
Practice makes perfect, right? With anything in life, practicing your craft only ensures you’re giving your customers the best quality product. This goes for makeup as well! Practicing new techniques, new products, different face structures and undertones, it all adds up to making my clients happy!
Consistent Content. Content creating was and still is something I truly despised. But remaining consistent and pushing my brand out onto your feed(s), is what has gotten me the success I have today.
Above all, being honest and real about my life. Promoting living a life filled with values and the utmost gratitude is near and dear to my heart. My business is solely run on the desire to make women feel beautiful. Of course, I need to get compensated for my efforts and time but what means the most to me is ensuring women feel absolutely beautiful in their own skin.
