We were lucky to catch up with Jennifer Counter recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jennifer, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today How did you come up with the idea for your business?
I started Jennifer Counter Consulting, because I wanted to help other entrepreneurs create, launch, and grow their businesses. I also own a Tutoring Center in Katy, Texas – Counter’s Tutoring Connection. I built this business from the ground up, so I understand the unique challenges that entrepreneurs face. I acquired a really strong sense of perseverance and business acumen, through my own entrepreneurial journey; so I felt strongly that I could support and inspire other entrepreneurs through business coaching and strategizing too. I am also a certified teacher by trade. I feel that my years as an educator and my skill set to teach, have really helped me guide other small business owners in properly creating their businesses, structuring their businesses, and building their business credit.

Jennifer, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m most proud of the joy and excitement that I see in my Consulting Clients eyes when they accomplish a goal. It’s a real honor to be a part of someone’s journey and it’s not something that I take lightly.
Three of the biggest problems I help solve for my clients are: How to acquire funding for their business that separates their personal finances from their business expenses by establishing business credit, shifting their mindset from that of an employee or solopreneur to a business owner, and creating and launching a business from the ground up.
I work with clients in a variety of industries. Many of my clients have been in business for years, but they just need help restructuring, expanding or gaining capital.
We’d love to hear the story of how you turned a side-hustle into a something much bigger.
I left my teaching career in 2014 to become a full time entrepreneur. At that time I was tutoring students in public coffee shops, restaurants, and libraries. I did not have a vision at that time for where my business was going, but I had the work ethic and boldness to step out on faith in to an unknown journey. I knew that God was leading me down a different path- this was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made, because it changed the trajectory of my life and my daughter’s life.
In 2017, I opened my first brick and mortar tutoring center in Katy, Texas… that is when my business really began to flourish! That next step of entrepreneurship taught me so much about business and it’s what lead me to start my own Consulting Firm now. I took all the knowledge that I gained, as well as the lessons learned through my own failures and success, and created a roadmap to help other entrepreneurs. I am so grateful to be in position to help others make their dreams come true too!

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
A lesson that I had to learn about building a business is to trust the timing of things- that things will happen as they are meant to. I think as entrepreneurs we sometimes think that because our will to succeed is so strong and because we are moving so fast, so should our success. But the truth is- things are coming together even when you can’t see them unfolding yet; and if you just stay the course things will start falling in place. Entrepreneurship is a lot of little things done right and a whole lot of trusting in the unseen.
