We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jennifer Chipman. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jennifer below.
Hi Jennifer, thanks for joining us today. What was the most important lesson/experience you had in a job that has helped you as a business owner?
I’ve learned many lessons throughout my design career, but these are the most important to me and an integral part of Bond:
Stay Authentic:
The spaces my team and I create should always be a reflection of our clients. It is important to let clients’ personalities, lifestyles, and energy shine through in the design of the homes.
Foster Connection:
I want all of my clients to feel a strong connection to their homes and environment. I aim to design spaces meant to be comfortably lived in and timelessly loved.
Create Meaningful and Positive Relationships:
Bond Design Company was founded on a client-designer relationship! To design my clients’ dream homes, I need to understand them on a personal level. I honor these relationships and take care to listen to my client’s individual needs and wants.
Search for Creative Solutions:
I always strive to deliver unique and ambitious design solutions. Not every client will have the same needs, and I understand that! As a design firm, my team and I strive to create spaces that are both visually pleasing and a joy to live in.
Intuition is Important:
I am a firm believer in following my instincts. I love design and respect the creative process. Part of this process includes intuitively understanding the feeling of a space and listening to what that space wants to become.
Interiors Must Stand the Test of Time:
Timelessness is key. Instead of following design trends and fads, I focus the design process on uncovering the true identity of each home. A home should honor the owner’s personality/lifestyle, the diversity of its natural landscape, and the rich history and culture of its surroundings.
This list is obviously specific to the interior design industry… but I have found that it also has so many beautiful parallels to life.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I like to think that I started my design career at a very young age. From designing custom furniture for my Barbie dream house to wallpapering my friends’ lockers in middle school, I just always knew that interior design was my passion and creative outlet. I graduated from the University of Utah and began pursuing my professional career in design where I freelanced for many years and then worked as a Senior Designer at a leading luxury interior design firm for nearly a decade before finding the right opportunity to spread my wings and start a firm of my own.
To me, design is so much more than just making a space look pretty. The name “Bond” refers to the connection between people and spaces based on shared emotions, interests, and experiences. I find myself especially inspired by the relationships created during the design process and feel that those connections are the driving force that makes a timelessly loved home. The company’s mission is not only to design beautiful spaces but to create moments of joy! We believe that we are all fundamentally bonded to our environments and that those environments should be an exciting reflection of our lifestyles, personalities, and energy. Because, at the end of the day, design is all about connection. It’s about how you use your space, how you move throughout it, and how it makes you feel.
When you focus on the feeling that you want a home to evoke instead of its aesthetic alone, it opens up a world of creative possibilities. One of the things that I am most proud of in my work is that no two projects are the same. As a creative, I don’t like the idea of compartmentalizing myself or my design team into one design style. While that works beautifully for other designers or firms, it just isn’t for me, as I crave the fluidity and artistic exploration that comes with trying new design styles and stretching my creativity.
How’d you meet your business partner?
Chelsey, my business partner and one of the core founders of Bond, was a client of mine at one point. Prior to Bond, I worked for Chelsey on several different properties. We really resonated with one another and developed a fantastic work synergy. After completing several projects together, Chelsey surprised me one day by proposing we start our own design firm together. Change is scary… but I just couldn’t turn down the opportunity. Our relationship ended up being the inspiration behind our brand. Bond was built on a client-designer relationship, so we wanted to focus on human connection and how interior design plays into that.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Relationships are at the core of everything I strive to do at Bond. Treating people kindly, really listening to my clients, connecting with the workers on a project, and valuing everyone’s role have truly kept Bond afloat during its first year. Almost all of our clients have come from personal referrals and connections. I am forever grateful to the builders, architects, and past clients who have recommended my team and me to others.
