Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jennifer Cheek . We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Jennifer , appreciate you joining us today. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
The Jen Cheek Luxury Hair Extension Salon was conceived over a decade ago, but it precedes my career as a cosmetologist. I fell in love with hair when I was a little girl. I’ve always been fascinated with texture, instead of Barbie, it was extensions! When I consider the beginnings of my idea for creating an extension salon it was for the purpose of solving a problem. Alopecia, thinning and balding runs through my bloodline. The women in my family have struggled with finding a way to feel confident in their natural hair, and many of the methods for adding extensions led to additional health concerns like psoriasis of the scalp alongside hair loss. When I began doing extensions, it was to create wigs for myself, as I walked through a long but necessary journey of eliminating extension methods that caused tension alopecia in my scalp. At the beginning of my process, you could see my scalp through the thinning of my hair all over my head. This process of strengthening and regrowth lasted for four years. During that time, it felt extremely compromising to provide the same services that ruined my own hair to my clients. My mission has always been to create beautiful, healthy hair through integrity and education. A few years prior to the launching of my Extension Salon, I had removed extensions completely from my service menu, which was disheartening because of my love for extensions and providing solutions for hair enhancement. Now my service menu captures the heart of why I do what I do, creating beauty as an extension of inner intention in the most natural way possible. If it worked for me, I would do anything to provide the template for others.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Jen Cheek Luxury Extension Salon is a unique experience for the woman looking for an enhancement to her hair needs and concerns. I specialize in natural settings for the hair, which means that I customize the hair solution that is best for the person sitting in my chair. I have worked with extensions for over 15 years, and it has been a solution for me and my family. I am well versed in working with solutions for hair loss in clients of all textures and densities. My specialty is grounded in my belief that extensions can be done in a way that benefits the scalp and provides hair health.
I am most proud of the fact that I create a hair experience that is both architectural and natural. To do this, I am a student first. I don’t venture into anything without knowledge, it is POWER! With an extensive background in teaching and education, I desire to educate clients about where they are in their haircare journey and where they are going. I am an artist with a passion to create work from all that I have learned and developed on every canvas that sits in my chair.

Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
The most effective strategy for growing your clientele starts with having the confidence to believe that you can attract business. For me, this comes from building my craft and increasing my capacity for new techniques, technology and media. Coming to the table with the resources and solutions that consumers want and are looking for is extremely valuable to building a business and growing clientele. Providing top quality products and services is what drives business forward.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
When I began my business, I had to quickly unlearn the notion that I could not make mistakes. LOTS of mistakes were made in my first few years of being a business owner. There will always be a hurdle or obstacle to overcome when it comes to business growth. I went through seasons that I didn’t know that I would make it through, but I learned that when it feels like it’s over and the business is going to cave in, you have to keep going, keep investing, keep learning and building.
