We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jennifer Canul a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jennifer , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today If you could go back in time do you wish you had started your business sooner or later
Honestly I first started my business back in like 2019-2020 but under a different name and I think it went way better back than than sometimes does now. I had so many clients then but I also was still starting still learning nails and what worked for me so it was definitely a lot of trial and error back then. With my business now yes it hasn’t even been a year and it has it slow days but I feel so much more confident doing nails now and I feel so much more comfortable running a business.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Jennifer I am the one woman show who runs painted by Jenn. I hand paint custom gel press on nails for anyone who doesn’t want to spend an arm and a leg on getting their nails done and sitting for hours on end at a nail salon.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
A lesson I had to unlearn is that not all business is good business. I have had to deal with some clients who are not worth the headache of trying to make them satisfied with my work. As a business owner you think any business, any amount of money is worth whatever but that’s not true if they criticize everything you do, complain about prices or shipping time then it’s not worth it not all business is good business and in the long run you’ll be glad you didn’t put yourself through all that just for the money.

How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
Honestly when I first started my first business I put in too much money and I constantly put money into it which in the end I was losing more than I was making it. With my now business painted by Jenn I had a lot of supplies on hand so I didn’t need to invest too much into my business and I think I have been profiting my business more than hurting it. Also every sale definitely does go back into my business for future or present use whether it’s for shipping, more supplies, or to bring in new products.
