We were lucky to catch up with Jennifer Campbell recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jennifer, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
My first daughter was born in 1992. Due to being born with a lung disease, I was told she wouldn’t live through her first 3 days, and I would hold her for the first time after she had died. She’s 33 now, so things worked out; however, through a very traumatic yet positive situation, I learned that things could have gone better in my situation if I had had support. A year later, I was a breastfeeding counselor, leading LaLeche League meetings. I also became an IBCLC and birth assistant for a midwifery practice. I spent 12 years in birthwork, and I loved it.
I divorced and had to give up birthwork as I needed set pay and hours as a single mom. My situation and giving it up were the most challenging 2 years of my adult life. I had also spent 12 years as a foster parent and another 3 years in a non-profit as part of the ED team for recruiting and training foster parents to work with the kids who had been subjected to the most challenges. (and as a blended family, we have 18 kids).
Fast forward many years, remarried, kids had gotten older, and my husband encouraged me to open a doula, CLE, CBE business, bringing me back to the world I adored. It was a big change, and I spent almost 4 years enjoying immersing myself in it again.
When the Executive Director position for DOULA CO-OP of Nevada came up, I switched gears again and gave up private clients. I was able to combine my years (15+) of birthwork and the corporate & non-profit career I had in the interim to become the ED as of June 3, 2025. It has been a big, beautiful life of pivoting based on my family, financial needs, and experiences

Jennifer, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I spent 12 years as a birth assistant, lactation consultant, and CBE trainer in The Bradley Method and Birthing From Within, and ran LaLeche League meetings with a passion for supporting women who have become Moms.
I’m currently a Certified Birth Doula. I’m also a Bereavement Doula® helping families struggling with grief and loss, as well as an Adoption & Surrogacy Doula, Childbirth Educator, and Certified Lactation Educator. I keep my site active for the blog, podcast, resource database and connecting. www.doulainreno.com
In addition to my Doula training, I have 33+ years in the trenches on my own journey as a Mama – parenting since 1992 – and am Mom Of 18 (yes – 18 kids!), I’ve written the blog – Mom’s Running It since 2011, and am host of Becoming Parents Podcast since May of 2017, which is in the top 2.5% in the world.
I am a Speaker and have 15+ years of experience in the foster care sector as both a parent and a trainer. I have received targeted training on topics such as crisis intervention, drug & alcohol addiction, surviving trauma, and suicide prevention, which has equipped me with a solid understanding of how to serve others experiencing trauma.
On December 1, 2022, I was the first doula in Nevada to be a Medicaid Provider. This significantly altered the trajectory of my business and clientele in amazing ways, allowing me to serve Nevada’s underserved – or UNserved communities. I have also been the only Tricare Provider in Washoe County, NV, working with military families. With 4 years in the USAF as a dependent, and also having 3 of my babies in Alaska, I understand military and rural lifestyles. These experiences helped me navigate my current position as ED.
I co-own Doula Business Blueprint (DBB) with a fellow Doula. We have an online learning platform that teaches doulas how to RUN their business. https://doulabusinessblueprint.org/
I’ve experienced infertility up to IVF and 3 miscarriages – one of which was twins at 16 weeks, as well as 1 hospital birth and 3 home births with midwives – two of which were water births. I breastfed 7 children, including 3 of my adopted babies, for 11 years of breastfeeding in total, relactating for 2 of those adopted babies. I have a huge blended family and have suffered the loss of an adult son almost 9 years ago at the age of 23.
I’m also married to an amazing man in Reno, NV, where we live full-time in our renovated RV for over 3 years now. I’m a healthy lifestyle enthusiast, and have an IG channel @fitcurvy50plus sharing my post-menopause journey in the hopes I can make a positive difference in another woman’s story. I work out daily with my daughter and her husband .
VOLUNTEER POSITIONS:
I’m a member of the local Doula Coop Non-Profit and on their Board as the Community Outreach Director & Director Of State Programming – Medicaid, DAP, and scholarships for doula training. (this has changed since becoming ED)
On the Board of the Nevada Breastfeeding Coalition.
I’m a Doula Certification Advisor for the Nevada Certification Board on their Advisory Board
Childbirth Educator for Real Choices Women’s Center

Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?
Community. Support. Another person to talk with. Therapy. Working through your own trauma. Mentorship & shadowing. Help navigating systems (Medicaid, Tricare, billing, business).

How’d you meet your business partner?
Tiara and I met at the first DOULA CO-OP of Nevada meeting. She flew up from Vegas to Reno to attend. I thought she was a stunning badass and was so impressed with her experience. We continued to connect for about 18 months, through the CO-OP and over time became friends and began discussing how many doulas don’t know how to RUN their business. Both of us had experience running individual businesses and had a great mind for how we could bring fellow doulas through the process of realizing they’re business owners, what that means, and how to navigate the process. It’s been amazing!
