We recently connected with Jennifer Burr and have shared our conversation below.
Jennifer, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s start with a story that highlights an important way in which your brand diverges from the industry standard.
My business was actually founded on this topic! Before I started Royal Road Coaching, I had a small business. I was seeking support but couldn’t find what I was looking for. Most coaches that I met with wanted to work 24/7 and be millionaires. I was looking for something different, so I became it. My business is all about people over profit, quality over quantity, and getting to know people instead of being a walking commercial. I wanted to bring it back to basics.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’ve always had a love of sales. Prior to business strategy, I had 14 plus years of sales experience ranging from retail, to direct sales, and banking. Over the years, I had acquired both experience and success from trainings, courses, and trial and error. I applied the lessons I had learned, both good and bad, to benefit my clients so they can succeed.
I mostly work with women who are new to business or looking to grow their current businesses in an authentic style. I use a basic method…. good old fashion one on one phone calls with all my clients. It helps me focus on them as individuals to implement tasks specifically to what they needing support with. They have to get vulnerable, and those calls are a safe space for them to do that.
I have the privilege of working with such a wide range of clientele due to my background as well as my love of learning. I’m constantly taking courses and classes in order to grow my personal development. I practice what I preach, and I want my clients to see that they aren’t alone.
When it comes to what I’m most proud of, it’s a toss-up. There’s nothing better than watching these women grow. As they come into their confidence, their business grows. They start figuring what their brand is, and who they are as business owners. It’s absolutely beautiful. On a more personal level, I’m a mom of four girls, I’m pretty proud of the fact that I’m showing my girls that they can have it all. It’s not always easy, but I’m raising strong women by example.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to unlearn toxic business ethics. I remember a time when I was with my family at Disney World, and I was taking a business call in Epcot. I was on my phone with a customer, and I was using my husband’s phone as a computer. At the time, I thought it was a “flex”. I told myself, “I can work from anywhere!” Now I realize how cringewothy that was. Who wants to work on vacation?
I’m constantly reminding my clients things like, “You don’t have to add a million people on social media. Make meaningful relationships.” And “You don’t have to answer every email or call that very minute.”
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
I believe that the most effective strategy for growing my clientele is being myself. I got very uncomfortable with speaking my truth, but I’m glad I did. I didn’t want to grow my business on constant stress, anxiety, and sleepless nights, and there are others who are in the exact same position I was in. When I support my clients in setting meaningful goals and creating a path that works for them, it reignites their fire, and others take notice. You shouldn’t feel trapped in your business. Yes, being an entrepreneur has its ups and downs, but you should be just as excited about your business now as you were whenever you first started.
