We caught up with the insightful Jennifer Bogg a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jennifer, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
In 2019, I decided to take a leap of faith within myself and open my own practice, Green Rose Counseling. With the professional experience I had and the knowledge I had learned along the way, I felt that it was finally the right time to use my skills and begin this next chapter. Although I had wanted to do so for a long time beforehand, it took time and careful preparation to be able to make this move. Finding other who were in support of my success that were also willing to help and be a part of the process, was not only important but very helpful in helping me make Green Rose Counseling happen.
I started with baby steps, the first of which was to purchase a laptop for the business. At the time, I remember this feeling like such a big deal. A big lesson that I learned during this time is that you are not going to know everything right off the bat. Asking for help, guidance, doing research and taking your time, is so important when starting your own business. I also had to believe in myself. If I didn’t believe in myself, then how would my clientele believe in me enough to follow me to my new practice or new patients want to reach out and put their trust in me. Even in moments where I may have had imposter syndrome kick in, I stayed true to believing in myself and my ultimate goal of not just “owning a business”, but continuing to do what I am passionate about and having the ability to provide therapy to my patients.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Jennifer Bogg and I am a Licensed Masters Social Worker and hold a clinical specialty. I completed my education at Wayne State University. I am the owner of Green Rose Counseling, located in Plymouth, MI.
We provide outpatient therapy services for children, adolescents, adults and families.
We offer in-person and telehealth services and use a HIPPA compliant platform for all documentation and telehealth services provided.
We specialize in area including but not limited to: Anxiety, depression, Trauma, Attachment/Co-Dependency, Grief and Loss, and Post-Partum Depression.
Green Rose Counseling has a wonderful team, which includes therapists Anne Marie Caldwell, MS, LLP and Kristi Rose, LMSW, CCTP. Both are wonderful assets to GRC and provide caring, warm and supportive care to each of their patients.
I am proud of the services we provide and the work that we do. We take pride at GRC in developing strong therapeutic relationships with our patients and establishing rapport within the community.
Training and knowledge matter of course, but beyond that what do you think matters most in terms of succeeding in your field?
I believe aside from training and knowledge, the most important role of a therapist is to have empathy, compassion and the ability to connect with others. Those seeking therapy are looking for someone to help support them through building a trusting rapport. I love being able to support this for others and also in finding the ability to be open and flexible in order to meet my patients where they are at. The way we connect with others helps us grow within the community and has helped my practice grow to where it is today.
I also think it’s important to connect with others not just in the terms of patient/client relationships, but within the therapist community. Being open to supporting others and utilizing others as resources are equally important. Understanding that our patients may need other resources, or sometimes something different than what we have to offer is important to be okay with because our first priority is what is best for our patient.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
Within the first year of opening GRC, the pandemic hit. Initially, not knowing how to handle this at first, I made the transition to telehealth sessions and focused on helping my patients through this transition. I had to get creative, helping to identify ways for patients to feel comfortable and find privacy in their homes, Work through how to connect through a screen, rather than in-person, and so much more.
In the beginning, I was just doing, trying to manage everything as best as I could. Eventually, I began finding a new sense of accomplishment in working through the challenges as they presented themselves and looking at this as a opportunity to bring out new ideas and ways of developing even more as a therapist and what GRC had to offer.
During this time, i was also greeted with the ability to grow and bring on more therapists, as GRC continued to grow. With the help of Anne Marie Caldwell and Kristi Rose and the skillsets they bring to GRC, we are thankfully continuing to grow and develop as a practice together.
