We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jennifer Aos a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jennifer , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. One of the things we most admire about small businesses is their ability to diverge from the corporate/industry standard. Is there something that you or your brand do that differs from the industry standard? We’d love to hear about it as well as any stories you might have that illustrate how or why this difference matters.
I strive to create not just beautiful and functional spaces, but healthy and environmentally friendly designs. Most interior designers are unaware of how their decisions can negatively impact the environment, their clients and their community. In addition, I have only met one other vegan interior designer in my career, so this is unique as well. Interior Design is one of the most wasteful industries and often has a negative impact on the environment. The fabric industry alone adds over 6 million tons of waste into landfills each year, including an extraordinary amount of unused fabrics. Remodeling can often have a negative impact too, both in terms of material waste and toxic runoff. Considering the built environment generates 40% of annual global C02 emissions, it is important to be mindful of the impact of these structures. There are many products and materials that pollute the home, create a toxic atmosphere and have a negative global impact. One of the simplest things anyone can do to create a healthier environment, is to specify low or zero VOC paint. My goal is to educate my clients on sustainable options so they can make the best decision for themselves, their family and their world.

Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
The best source of new clients has been referrals. It is a business that requires a lot of trust, therefore, I think most clients are skeptical of what they see online, especially Google Ads or paid social media posts. There is nothing quite as compelling as walking into your friend’s home and listening to them brag about what their designer did for them.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect is seeing the transformation at the end along with the happy clients.
