We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jennie Angel. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jennie below.
Hi Jennie , thanks for joining us today. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
I began writing songs at a young age. Music always fascinated me. Now that I have experienced more challenges in life I believe it is time to bring more light to domestic violence and honesty in relationships. If you listen to my songs, “move on”, “leaving”, and “no one to blame”, you’ll hear an insight in my life story. “Girl next door”, is geared to young women who need to hear that it’s ok to say no and to choose their partners wisely. Just cause a cute boy shows you attention doesn’t mean you have to compromise your morals. There is a HUGE lack of morality today amongst our youth because of public figures and their influence. I’d like to help correct that. Embracing sexuality and identity does not have to be a public thing.
Another reason why I am putting so much into my music is to hopefully be able to give back to the Waterbury community that I have been a teacher and coach for the past 5 years. The poverty is out of control and more programs for parents/students are needed as well as appropriate facilities and staff to support. I hope that I will be able to see this realized soon.
Jennie , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am a singer songwriter and performer and I write songs daily. I provide original music as well as performances with a band or solo acoustic. I absolutely LOVE singing. One day I went to my local bar and the band asked me if I had any requests. I asked to sing Janis Joplin’s Bobbly McGee and was offered my first paying gig. This was a huge realization for me that I could do something I love and make money doing it. Then my wheels began cranking and songwriting became my focus.
Have you ever had to pivot?
I’m currently trying to pivot from teaching to music full time. I hope to influence bigger companies to support me in my mission.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I had to unlearn being a people pleaser. Being in the abusive relationships that I was in I was always trying to help them and lost myself in the relationship. I will never do that again.
