We were lucky to catch up with Jenni Greer recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jenni, appreciate you joining us today. Before we get into specifics, let’s talk about success more generally. What do you think it takes to be successful?
I have witnessed a lot of really beautiful artists and talented photographers miss out on abundant success because they have difficulty with the business side of this job. Making great art is important, but creating a professional, streamlined experience for your clients is every bit as important, too. A successful photography career has three major components: quality art, good business practices, and personal relationships. Making people feel comfortable and beautiful will keep them coming back for more, and referring their friends!
Jenni, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My photography career grew out of a love for writing and sharing online back when blogs were a big deal. I bought a DSLR camera to enhance my sharing at the time, and quickly fell in love with all things photography! Over the years, I developed a client base and honed my skills in capturing families and babies in a classic, bright style. There are a lot of trends that come and go in the photography world, and I always try to create something that won’t appear too dated or themed in the future.
My focus is on providing really solid, joyful portraits that are beautifully, naturally lit. I’m really proud of the defined style I’ve developed over the years, and the relationships I’ve built with so many wonderful families.
How did you build your audience on social media?
My story is unique in that I built an audience through blogging which is now a bit more obsolete (or at least not as prevalent as it was). But I would say if you can harness the power of social media influencing and gain a broad base of local folks who like and trust you, you will be leaps ahead of the rest when starting out. One of the most important pieces of advice I would give any new photographer is to begin building a newsletter list early and make this a priority – because the ability to pop into someone’s inbox directly (rather than relying on social media algorithms) is GOLD.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
Providing really great service, consistency, and a beautiful final product. I also provide sneak peeks for my clients on social media, which they usually then share to their own audiences. This creates organic growth and referrals!
