We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jenne$$y. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jenne$$y below.
Hi Jenne$$y, thanks for joining us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
The most meaningful project I’ve worked on is my upcoming EP, Cocoon. Cocoon is the final installment to the story that I created within my projects, beginning with Butterfly Effect. Before I ever started singing, I wrote poetry and stories. I wrote my first screenplay and book when I was 14 years old. I’ve always loved the art of story telling so I knew that whenever I started pursuing music professionally, I wanted to highlight conceptual projects , with proper story lines. I’m also a big fan of trilogy movies, which inspired the idea to have the story line be broken down into 3 different projects. Pretty much all of my music has been inspired by real life events and experiences but Cocoon is the most personal project that I have to date. It highlights a time of great personal healing, self reflection and growth. And I believe it also is the project where I really started to find my sound and become more comfortable with the songwriting process. Cocoon has a lot of gems for anyone who may be going through a time of personal transition and transformation.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am an R&B/ Neo Soul singer and song writer based in Atlanta, GA. Music in general has been a large part of my life ever since I was a little girl. The minute I realized I had a talent for singing is the minute I imagined myself being a singer, on stage performing in front of thousands of fans. I began singing when I was about 8 or 9 years old but prior to singing, I wrote poetry. Along with music, I loved writing and the art of story telling. Throughout my adolescence, I participated in several creative extra curricular activities such as band (where I played the clarinet), dance and chorus. After I graduated college with a degree in IT and spent several years working in my field, I found that music was still a large passion of mine and something that I ultimately wanted to seriously pursue. After I was laid off from an IT job back in 2020 right before the COVID lockdowns, I decided to pursue music professionally and began working on my first ever project, Butterfly Effect, and the rest has been history from there. I’ve come across plenty of set backs and obstacles; not having the proper funds to invest in my music the way that I truly wanted to, music equipment breaking or crashing unexpectedly, losing personal and professional relationships due to creative differences, opportunities falling through or not being quite what I thought they would be, and dealing with personal issues. including brief instances of writer’s block. But I am extremely proud of myself for choosing to keep pursuing my dreams because they are what fulfill me and give me purpose. I do music solely for the love and the passion of it; anything positive that comes with that is just a bonus.
: Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
As I’ve stated before, I do music for the love and the passion. The goal that is driving my creative journey is to be able to not only survive but thrive off of my natural, God given gifts and talents. My mission is to lead a life that is authentic to who I am and to ultimately be happy with the choices I have made and the path that I have chose. And I feel that sharing my music is the best way for me to achieve that goal.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is seeing people enjoy the music that I create! Especially when they end up enjoying it just as much I do, if not more! When anyone reaches out to me with beautiful words of encouragement, or stories of how listening to my music has gotten them through some difficult times, I’m just in awe and extremely grateful that something I made could have such an impact on someone else. Receiving love and appreciation like that means the world to me and makes the journey all the more worth it.
