Embarking on Our Real Estate Journey: The Blend of Necessity and Ambition

Starting in real estate, the law dictated our first steps, but our aspirations shaped our path. South Carolina law requires new real estate agents to accumulate three years of experience under a brokerage. For Natalie, independence beckoned from the start, yet the daunting workload initially made her second-guess the leap. Jenna, on the other hand, was looking to supplement her income and tackle student loans. Despite these differences, a shared entrepreneurial spirit was already kindling the flames of what would soon become our joint venture. For Natalie, the drive towards independence was compelling from the very beginning. However, the realization of the substantial responsibility that comes with owning a brokerage—particularly the accountability for the actions of other licensees under her supervision—highlighted the enormity of the task.
2. Filling the Void: The Birth of REHI
The creation of our brokerage, The Real Estate House International (REHI), wasn’t just a choice—it was a calling. We saw a gap in the market for a brokerage that aligned with our vision and values, and when we couldn’t find one, we decided to build it. It was a decision that required us to stretch beyond our comfort zones, balancing work, family, and passions in a tightrope walk of dedication and sacrifice.

Looking back, starting our own firm was not just the right choice—it was our only choice. It was the path that both of us were meant to tread, driven by an unquenchable entrepreneurial thirst. This journey has been a testament to our commitment to ourselves, our vision, and the community we aim to serve, showcasing our resolve to not just exist but to excel and make a meaningful impact.
4. The Early Days: A Story of Resilience and Vision
Our journey began amidst the turmoil of 2020—a year marked by a global pandemic and profound social upheaval. It was during these challenging times that Natalie and Jenna, then colleagues at another brokerage, felt the urgent call to action. Compelled by the desire to make a difference and driven by a vision for a Black-owned, Charleston-based agency led by women, we took the bold step of founding REHI. In the following months, Natalie passed the brokerage exam, laying the groundwork for what has become a beacon of innovation and empowerment in real estate.

The inception years of REHI have been a rollercoaster of emotions—exciting, daunting, and enlightening all at once. From grappling with the nuts and bolts of business operations to evolving our client engagement model into “The REHI Experience,” we’ve navigated the seas of entrepreneurship with determination. It’s been a journey of self-funding, adapting to market dynamics, and staying true to our mission amidst a whirlwind of challenges. Yet, here we are, stronger and more focused, ready to pave the way forward, inspired by every hurdle we’ve crossed and every success we’ve achieved.

Jenna’s Journey: In 2010, Jenna ignited her passion for real estate with the purchase of her first home. Despite initial restrictions on fixer-uppers, her interest persisted. In 2016, she dove into real estate as a side hustle, and the momentum hasn’t waned since. Specializing in renovations, investments, and properties for those aged 55 and above, Jenna is recognized for innovation, resourcefulness, and an infectious smile.
Dedicating herself to tackling challenges, Jenna became a realtor of distinction, a top producer, and an outstanding technology rising star. Early in our journey, we found ourselves caught up in the hustle, aligning our pace with external pressures and allowing others’ opinions to influence our strategic direction. For instance, within the first 1.5 years, we were part of an accelerator program that encouraged “accelerated growth.” The pressure to expand to five cities in the next three years became intense. In the midst of this, we realized that we were jeopardizing the very freedom we sought when we started this company.
The turning point came after several moments of stepping back for mental health restoration. We recognized the need to pivot, placing our well-being and the essence of why we started this venture at the forefront. We added the word “harmony” to our core values. This was a conscious decision to prioritize decisions that resonated with us, our families, and our unique timing.
We acknowledged that true success, for us, wasn’t about conforming to someone else’s timeline but about being present and alive throughout the journey. This shift allowed us to regain control of our narrative, emphasizing the importance of balance, well-being, and a sense of harmony in every decision we make. It’s not about the pace others set for us; it’s about the rhythm that aligns with our vision and values.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
Our approach isn’t just about transactions; it’s about building and growing a family.
