We recently connected with Jenna Ramsey and have shared our conversation below.
Jenna, appreciate you joining us today. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
As a wedding videographer, I feel as though I have a deep appreciation of memories and legacy. When I was younger I would run around with my cheap little video camera filming everything in sight. Now, my whole family loves watching the clips that documented those moments in our lives. I always knew growing up that I wanted to work with people and use my creativity. When I was 18 I went through a lot of changes very quickly in my life. That was also the year I started my wedding videography business. I think the timing of that made me truly appreciate how quickly life can change and how interregnal preserving memories can be. I knew then that my mission was to capture moments for people. The laugh of a loved one. The way a dress twirls or a ring sparkles. The shaky voice of a groom moments before his bride comes down the aisle. I knew my job went beyond filming a wedding day to capturing a moment a new family’s life they were going to hold on to for the rest of their life.
The story I always love to tell to explain this is of my grandparents. Both of my grandparents passed a long time ago. However, in the summer of 2020 something magical happened. As my family spent a lazy Sunday all together my sister found a tape we hadn’t seen before. We pulled out our VCR out of the dust and cobwebs and thankfully that power light still flickered on. We put in the tape and suddenly there was a gasp around the room. The tape contained actual footage of my grandparents wedding day. For the first time I was able to see my grandma laugh on her wedding day. I saw how cute and nervous my grandpa looked. I saw how relieved he looked when the ceremony was over and he was walking down the aisle with his wife. I got to actually watch the way my grandma’s dress moved or see HER dad walk her down the aisle.
I think that really made me think about someday future generations doing that with my footage and that makes me really excited.
Jenna, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am a 23 year old entrepreneur and full time pet parent (dog AND cats)! I’ve been running my wedding videography business for almost 5 years now and absolutely loving it. My business is called Jen Creates: “Films That Feel Like Polished Sunshine”. My brand is specifically focused on love, light, and legacy. I started my business the summer of my senior year of high school and worked three jobs to earn the money to pay for the gear and education needed to make this my full time profession. I think a couple things may set me apart from others in my industry. For one, this is an extremely male dominated industry so I think brides in particular are really excited to find just another woman to connect with. Being a woman in this industry gives me some unique perceptions into what it’s like to be a bride on her wedding day and how that feels. I work really hard to make all my clients feel seen and heard in every aspect leading up to the day, on the day, and then afterwards. I think the other thing that sets me apart would be my fascination with little moments. I love capturing them. In this industry it’s easy to be carried away with focusing on solely the technical aspects or the gear. While that is important my priority has always been the people and the moments they’re creating. I would say I’m extremely proud of how far I’ve come in 5 years. I didn’t even own my own camera back then. When you’re 18 and you start your own business there’s this expectation people have of “okay but when are you going to get a real job?” so now it’s huge to me to look back and see how far I’ve come. I love that I’ve gotten to serve so many couples and make so many friends along the way as well. I would love if Jen Creates became an inspiration to any other young entrepreneurs who feel like their dreams are impossible. I’m so passionate about my mission and how my job lets me live that out and I think anyone starting their own business just needs a mission their passionate enough about and it’ll work out.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
As a creative, there has always been something extremely fulfilling about being able to share your vision with the world. All of my life I’ve been able to see the world around me through camera angles, shadows, and composition. I enjoy seeing the beauty in the mundane and my job allows me to show others what they may not see on their own. The more creatively fulfilled you are the more creativity pours out of you and I think that’s a really special gift to be able to share with the world.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
In my opinion, the best way to get clients is just through referrals from other people in your industry and former clients. I love to be friends with everyone I work with just because I love people. However, with those connections come all my favorite new clients! You can market all you want but if you don’t have connections in your industry you are going to have a hard time moving forward. Some of my clients have even found me because they watched me work at their friend’s wedding and decided they liked me right then and there! Connections will get you very far in life.
