Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jenna Poulsen. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Jenna, thanks for joining us today. Alright, let’s take a stroll on memory lane, back to when you were an apprentice or intern. What’s a memorable story from that time that you can share with us?
The biggest lesson I’ve had engraved in my whole being is to “own your extra”. This has become my tag line & a mantra I live by. “Own your extra” means to live authentically & own who you are – especially the “extra” qualities that make you uniquely YOU.
This has evolved into my mantra through a series of experiences. The most distinguishing experience that helped me to start the journey to finding who I was as a person & how I would begin my journey to my career was in one of my final senior capstone classes at the University of Colorado.
During our final week of classes the instructor asked us to go around the room to share our after graduation plans & what we aspired to do. In a room full of international affairs major, like myself, there were lots of Peace Corp & plans to go to DC. When the ball was passed to me, I shared that I wanted to work for Victoria’s Secret PINK & help with nationwide tours. To this day, I can remember having some shame answering the way I did because it was so far off of anyone else’s plans and it didn’t seem as “good willed” as my classmates.
I wish I could go back to share with my younger self that it’s ok to not follow the same path as everyone else & it’s equally as brave & admirable to pursue your own calling & path. It’s taken many internships & jobs to help me gain skills along the way to ultimately lead me to the path of starting my own small business but the biggest takeaway was surely to lead with confidence, pride and own my extra!
Jenna, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
The Frills seeks to take the stress out of planning for you! We love to connect friends and family over scenic views, delicious food & beautiful decor. By selecting one of our fully inclusive picnic packages all you have to do is show up & enjoy the good company – we’ll do all the heavy lifting for you!
We relish in being able to take the stress away from your special events so that you have more time to soak it in & make memories!
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
The best source for new clientele so far has been meeting new connections through my side hustles & day job! Spreading the word through my personal Instagram & through word of mouth has been my best source for new clients.
Have you ever had to pivot?
I was heavily inspired by all the pop up picnic companies in Southern California when living there during the pandemic. Surprisingly, CA allows for picnics to pop up without permitting so I thought since California is typically more restrictive Colorado I would not have any issues. I’ve since learned that it’s illegal to profit off public land & you risk ticketing and fines for not holding a permit for events.
I’ve had to pivot to encouraging clients to host at their homes, backyards or use my indoor venue partner i.e.: Denver Photo Collective!
