We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jenna Freitas. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jenna below.
Jenna, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to go back in time and hear the story of how you came up with the name of your brand?
A Good Pear. A good pair? You can’t have one without the other. Identical twin sisters running their own design studio? The Pearfect name. I can’t remember the true moment the name for our studio was spoken aloud. With twins, we often adopt each other’s memories. So to this day we both say we came up with the name! We knew we wanted a name that represented the fact that we were twins without being overly cheesy, but also communicated our brand mission. We also got a super cute icon out of it as well!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Jenna Freitas and I am a Graphic Designer, Art Director and Business Owner based in New England. I started my journey as a creative back in 2017 at a small agency in the NH seacoast. From there, I took the leap to work at a Gen Z Powerhouse Media Brand based in Boston and grew from a Designer to a Design Director in 4 years. I then had the opportunity of a lifetime to work for one of my favorite athletic clothing brands as a Design Director. After 1 year I was unexpectedly laid off and finally took the leap to run my own creative studio, A Good Pear, with my identical twin sister Kelly.
Over the course of my career, I have worked on creative digital and physical marketing and brand campaigns, events, activations, merch design and managed multiple teams of some of the most creative designers I have ever worked with! I absolutely love working with passionate people who care about the work they are creating and putting out into the world.
My passion lies in partnerships. I find joy in building and leading teams and mentoring clients. At A Good Pear, we don’t just sell logos, we work together as a partnership with our clients to guide them through the creative journey. We are always reaching out and collaborating with other freelancers and small business owners to make magic!
Can you talk to us about how your side-hustle turned into something more.
My identical twin sister Kelly and I both studied graphic design in college and always knew that one day we wanted to own our own creative studio. We always dreamed “big” when we were kids and this was a goal we were passionate about achieving. It started in small steps, from freelancing on the side while working 9-5s, giving out friends and family “discounts” while we juggled multiple projects, working late hours, and totally under pricing ourselves to big clients.
After 7 years, Kelly quit her job back in 2023 to pursue growing our business full time. I was still working as a Design Director at an apparel brand at the time, and after being laid off in March 2024 we knew this was finally our time to grow this business.
We are just under 3 months in – both working full time on incredible client work while planning our business goals – all before the age of 30. The crazy part about making your dreams a reality is the fact that you still can surprise yourself! We always knew this was what we wanted to do, but we didn’t know what it would look or feel like. Each day comes with it’s own challenges and growing pains, but the feeling of “this is what I should be doing” has always remained – and for that we are so grateful. Our goals are always shifting and we continue to celebrate every small milestone and step forward as a win!
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
Referrals and connections! We learned so much along the way growing our business, but the biggest thing that has stood out to me so far during this journey has been the community and network fostered throughout – eventually turning into new clients.
We have been so fortunate to connect with other creatives, mentors, and business owners throughout our creative careers. It can be so scary to take the leap to start your own business without knowing how to do it or even having the connections for new work. One thing that has always been so valuable to Kelly and I is the importance of partnerships, we don’t call ourselves A Good Pear for nothing!
From the beginning we wanted our creative process to be more of a team, mentoring and motivating along the way. We have continued to gain new clients through referrals, I would say right now 80-90% of our new clients are always a referral. This is super important to us as well, it feels so good having a friend share your business, or a former coworker reach out to pull you into a project. We love working with people with passion, and we’d always prioritize the people and the process over the budget. People will never forget how you made them feel, and this is something we value tremendously when we’re working with our clients.
