We recently connected with Jenna Benn Shersher and have shared our conversation below.
Jenna, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
At 29, I was diagnosed with Gray Zone Lymphoma, a rare blood cancer that at the time impacted less than 200 people worldwide. The experience quickly revealed how isolating cancer can be, despite having the best medical team and a loving family by my side. Having a strong medical team and support system are just two critical components of a cancer patient’s hierarchy of needs.
Being physically and socially active had always been a source of joy for me. Suddenly, these joys were stripped away indefinitely. Desperate for human connection outside my apartment walls, I turned to virtual connections.
Even as my body, fatigued from treatment, craved movement, I missed expressing myself through dance. Though my range was limited, I could still move, albeit not as vigorously as before. So, I set up my camera, played Chubby Checker, and started doing The Twist.
This small moment sparked an idea that exceeded my wildest dreams and led to the creation of Twist Out Cancer.
Starting Twist Out Cancer involved significant personal and professional risks. First, sharing my cancer journey and vulnerabilities publicly was a major risk, exposing me to potential judgment and emotional strain. Additionally, dedicating time and resources to establish a nonprofit while recovering from cancer treatment posed financial and physical challenges. The risk was driven by a desire to combat the isolation I felt and provide a platform for others to find connection and healing through creative expression.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
After cancer treatment, I decided to dedicate my life to cancer support and advocacy. As a cancer survivor, my personal experience with a rare blood cancer called Grey Zone Lymphoma profoundly influenced my career trajectory and commitment to supporting others facing similar difficulties. My journey from diagnosis to remission was marked by challenges and triumphs, which I chose to share with the world, transforming my personal story into a beacon of hope and inspiration for many.
How I Got Into My Industry

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
My journey has been a profound testament to resilience. One story that highlights this quality is my battle with a rare form of cancer, Grey Zone Lymphoma, which I was diagnosed with at the young age of 29.
Despite the shock and fear that accompanied my diagnosis, I faced my illness with remarkable strength and determination. I underwent aggressive chemotherapy treatments, which brought about severe physical and emotional challenges. During this time, I decided to chronicle my journey on my blog, “Kill It in the Butt.” Writing served as both a therapeutic outlet and a source of inspiration for others going through similar battles.
One particularly illustrative moment of my resilience occurred during a low point in my treatment. The chemotherapy had taken a toll on my body, leaving me weak and exhausted. Yet, I refused to let the illness define me or rob me of my spirit. Instead, I chose to channel my energy into advocacy and support for others facing cancer.
I launched “Twist Out Cancer,” a non-profit organization aimed at helping cancer patients and their loved ones cope with the emotional and psychological impact of the disease. Through this initiative, I created a community where people could share their stories, offer support, and find strength in solidarity.
My resilience was not just in my ability to endure the physical rigors of cancer treatment but also in my capacity to transform my pain into a force for good. I turned my personal struggle into a mission to uplift others, embodying the essence of resilience—rising above adversity, finding purpose in hardship, and fostering hope and connection in the face of life’s most daunting challenges.
My story is a powerful reminder that resilience is not just about surviving difficult times but also about using those experiences to make a positive impact on the world around you.
