We recently connected with Jenn Hurless and have shared our conversation below.
Jenn, appreciate you joining us today. Earning a full time living from one’s creative career can be incredibly difficult. Have you been able to do so and if so, can you share some of the key parts of your journey and any important advice or lessons that might help creatives who haven’t been able to yet?
Yes, I’ve been fortunate to earn a full-time living from my creative work, but it didn’t happen overnight. In the beginning, I took on any and all opportunities that came my way. I didn’t limit myself by niching right away—I stayed open to learning and trying new things, even outside my comfort zone. That adaptability was key to building a solid foundation.
Over time, I honed my expertise in social media, branding, and digital marketing. Initially, I wore all the hats, doing everything myself. But as my business grew, I realized the only way to scale was to build a team I could trust to execute my creative ideas. Letting go of control wasn’t easy, but it was necessary. Surrounding myself with talented people who could bring different perspectives and strengths allowed me to focus on the bigger picture.
Collaboration has also been a cornerstone of my journey. Partnering with others not only expanded my skill set but also led to referrals that helped grow my business. I’ve always made it a point to surround myself with people who know more than I do—whether it’s industry peers, collaborators, or mentors. Staying in a constant state of learning has been one of the most valuable tools in my journey.
Looking back, I wouldn’t change much, but if I could have sped up the process, I would have prioritized delegation and team-building sooner. The sooner you embrace collaboration and trust others to help carry your vision, the sooner you can focus on scaling and creating work you’re truly passionate about.

Jenn, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m Jennifer Hurless, the founder and creative force behind Go Be Social Media, a boutique agency specializing in social media management, branding, content creation, and digital marketing strategies. I started this journey in 2012 after leaving a career in architecture to follow my passion for creativity and connection. Over the years, my agency has evolved to help businesses of all sizes—from startups to established brands—enhance their online presence, engage their audiences, and ultimately grow their businesses.
What sets Go Be Social Media apart is our approach: it’s personal, intentional, and focused on results. I’m proud to say that we’ve built our business entirely through referrals, without ever advertising. I believe this speaks to the relationships we’ve built with clients and the trust they place in our work. Every success story we’ve been a part of is a testament to that trust.
At Go Be Social Media, we solve a range of problems for our clients:
For overwhelmed business owners, we provide a full-service approach to take the guesswork out of social media and digital marketing.
For those struggling to stand out, we create tailored strategies and content that connect with their audience and align with their brand.
For those looking to scale, we provide data-driven insights and creative solutions that turn engagement into growth.
What I’m most proud of isn’t just the work we’ve done but the relationships we’ve built and the team we’ve created. None of this would be possible without the talented individuals who bring my vision to life every day.
Looking ahead, I want people to know that I’m passionate about sharing what I’ve learned. I’m open to coaching and mentoring others who are navigating the world of social media and digital marketing. Whether it’s a business owner trying to DIY their social media or an aspiring marketer looking to refine their skills, I’m here to help.
Ultimately, my goal is to empower others to succeed—not just through the services we provide but by sharing the knowledge I’ve gained along the way. There’s nothing more fulfilling than watching others thrive because of the tools, strategies, or encouragement I’ve been able to offer.

What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
The most effective strategy for growing my clientele has been truly understanding my audience. It all starts with knowing who you’re trying to reach—whether it’s potential clients, collaborators, or customers. I invest time in diving deep into who they are, what they need, and what problems they’re facing.
Creating detailed client profiles has been a game-changer. When you take the time to map out their pain points, goals, and preferences, it becomes so much easier to tailor your offerings and show how you can solve their specific problems.
Another key factor has been staying open to feedback. Some of my best insights have come from conversations with friends, colleagues, and even clients themselves. Listening to their perspectives allows me to continuously improve and refine both my services and approach.
Ultimately, the key is to combine empathy with strategy. When you truly understand your audience and are willing to adapt, you can create meaningful connections that naturally lead to growth.

Do you have any insights you can share related to maintaining high team morale?
Managing a team and maintaining high morale starts with creating an environment where collaboration and communication are at the forefront. I encourage my team to take ownership of their work and feel empowered to share their ideas and take creative risks. When everyone has a voice and feels their contributions matter, it fosters trust and strengthens the team dynamic.
Open communication is equally critical. Regular check-ins and team meetings ensure everyone stays aligned and connected. I strive to create a space where people feel comfortable sharing their thoughts—whether it’s innovative ideas or concerns—and where feedback flows both ways.
Above all, I believe in leading with empathy and authenticity. Being approachable and human as a leader goes a long way in building trust. Acknowledging challenges, admitting mistakes, and showing that we’re all working toward the same goals as a team creates a sense of camaraderie and mutual respect. When people feel valued and heard, morale naturally follows.
