We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jenn Hsu a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Jenn, thanks for joining us today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – walk us through the story?
For nearly 8 years, I had a stable corporate job in brand marketing at the headquarters of a national fashion retailer . The office was close to home and offered a lot of fun perks and benefits. But during the pandemic when the pace of life slowed down, I realized I wasn’t happy encouraging people to constantly buy more stuff. Unlike all my co-workers, my desk at work was also never cluttered with endless tchotchkes and collectibles. I believed in helping people find peace and calm without stuff and clutter, especially in their personal spaces and home life. Even as a child, I had always found enjoyment in taking out my stuff in cabinets and drawers to organize…just for fun. With the encouragement of my husband, I quit my job to pursue a new career in professional home organizing. After briefly working on the team of a celebrity organizer/social media influencer, I have decided to launch my own business helping everyday people regain control and find peace in their home.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My most vivid memory of kindergarten was getting in trouble for organizing a cup of wooden pencils that were all facing different directions while everyone else was paying attention to story time. But the results were so satisfying and worth the scolding. And when I think back to what I did whenever I was bored as a child during long summer days, it was taking out all my stationery in deep cabinets and re-organizing until everything fit perfectly. As an adult, whenever family and friends needed help managing their closets, pantries, or junk drawers, I couldn’t wait to get my hands on their stuff. Their reaction and appreciation made me realize I was naturally good at something that could help streamline daily routines for everyday people who were stressed about all the items they owned. After quitting my corporate job, I can now work directly with individuals and families to find a logical flow in the placement of items in their home. Feedback from clients who say: “My kids love grabbing their own snacks in the pantry now,” “I would have never thought of reconfiguring the closet shelves in this way,” or “We wouldn’t have been able to go on vacation if you didn’t help us unpack and set up our rooms” never gets old or less exciting!
Can you share one of your favorite marketing or sales stories?
For nearly 6 months, I put off posting about my new business and services on my local neighborhood Facebook group that had over 14K members because of fear. I was scared people would judge me for my rates, scared they thought they could do for themselves the services I offered, and scared that there would be a general lack of interest. I was naively hoping that people would magically find out about my business just because I made my website live and was ready to organize. When I finally mustered the courage to post, I got encouraging comments and landed new, ideal clients who were eager for me to step into their homes to start organizing!
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I don’t cut corners when I organize. I could easily not wipe down drawers or cabinets, and clients would be none the wiser. I could easily organize in a way that makes for the most beautiful Instagram posts but don’t serve the needs of the client. I could shop for the most expensive organizing products when there are cheaper dupes available online. Instead, I am constantly asking clients how their mind thinks and what their daily routine looks like so the organizing system I create for them can be maintained when I leave. Sometimes, a solution for their stuff isn’t Pinterest or Instagram worthy, but it does solve a fundamental problem in their space. And I’ll always wipe down the insides of cabinets that the client wouldn’t think twice about because I want the organizing experience to be complete and thoughtful.
