Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jenn Deal. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Jenn, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. The first dollar your business earns is always special and we’d love to hear how your brand made its first dollar of revenue.
My first client was a stranger on Instagram. I had been posting on Instagram for about a month just to challenge myself to get out of my comfort zone, not really expecting anything to come of it. I was so nervous about putting myself out there, but I committed to posting even when it felt uncomfortable. It was late on a Saturday night when I saw someone had booked a consult with me for the next morning! I was so nervous and excited. I knew how I wanted to run the call, but I had never done one before, so I wasn’t sure how it would go. I’m sure I messed some things up on the call, but the only thing I remember is how lovely the conversation was. To my surprise, she say “yes” to working with me, and we worked together for six months. During that time, she really committed to changing her life, and she started building this beautiful intentional life for herself. We still keep in touch on social media, and I love watching her life continue to blossom.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’m a trademark lawyer, and a life and career coach for lawyers.
I got into coaching because hiring my first life coach completely changed my life, and I want to help others do the same. Being a lawyer can be so hard. There are extremely high expectations, and overwork is common and often encouraged. Plus, most lawyers are high achievers, so sprinkle in some perfectionism and being afraid of failure, and it feels even harder.
So I help lawyers take their work life from miserable to more fulfilling, satisfying, exciting, interesting, engaging, meaningful, and fun, which spills into the rest of their life in the best way possible.
I help lawyers do things like:
Ditch the perfectionism
Set boundaries at work and in their personal life
Stop people pleasing
Stop procrastinating
Stop the anxiety and catastrophizing
Quit overworking and overscheduling
Get control over their calendar and create MORE time in their day
Get rid of the Sunday Scaries and fully enjoy their weekend
Improve their relationships
Make more money and advance in their career
Decide what they want to do next with their career, create a plan, and put it into action
Build up their confidence so they can show up the way they want in their careers
I love watching my clients make big changes in their lives. I’m so proud of them for doing the hard work and grateful to get to support them along the way.
I’m most proud of the fact that I get I continue to put myself out there and try new things over and over again. Entrepreneurship requires a willingness to fail. A willingness to do things you haven’t done before. And to do it all unsure and scared. I love that I’m willing to show up again and again for my clients, my business, and myself.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
As a lawyer, I’m naturally risk adverse. I like when the rules are clear. I like when outcomes are certain. I like to get the A+. I like everyone to be pleased with me and think I’m doing a good job. Being an entrepreneur requires that you ditch all of those things. You have to try things without knowing if they will work. You have to expect that not everyone will agree with you. You have to mess up and be willing to come back and do it again, over and over. You have to ditch the safety of being employed by someone else and following someone else’s rules and plan. You have to be the person who makes the plan and makes the rules and take responsibility for the results you are creating.
It’s exhilarating and scary all at the same time.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
It was a real pivot for me to start my business. I was a partner in a large law firm, which is often touted as the gold standard for lawyers. To create the business that I wanted, I had to give that up. The money. The prestige. The security. But it has been absolutely worth it. I love the way my life looks right now, and I love getting to help lawyers create careers and lives that they love.
