We recently connected with Jenise Miller and have shared our conversation below.
Jenise, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
When I graduated esthetics school, I planned on branching out on my own after gaining experience in the field for at least a year. Unfortunately I didn’t receive business training in the program that I attended so in my mind, I wanted to gain knowledge and experience from working in a spa and networking, then pursue my own establishment once I developed the confidence. But after putting in plenty of applications and not landing a job within the first couple months, I started to get restless and worried that no one would hire me because I was fresh out of school with little to no experience. So being the problem solver that I am, I made a few calls and was able to get my business registered and ready to go within a few months after graduation. It was a big risk because I had little to no startup money at the time, very little knowledge on the business side of things, but I knew plenty about skin care and I was determined to work within my passion. Right after I started my business I was able to get a receptionist job at a spa and was able to work there until the pandemic shut everything down. It was during the shut down time where I was really able to fully grasp what I wanted to focus on as far as my clients and my business as a whole and find the need in what I was trying to accomplish. I wanted to be unique but transparent as well so my clients would be able to get the knowledge and information they needed from me and get the best out of not only their service, but their experience as a whole.
Jenise, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
When I started my journey to become an esthetician, I didn’t really know what direction I wanted to go in. As a single mother, I have always been ambitious and determined to create something my kids can have after I’m gone that they can pass it along to the generations to come. After some time in school, I became passionate with skincare all together and wanted to help others achieve the best results possible for their skin. I focused my studies on ingredients for ethnic skin, what triggers acne, and how to suppress inflammation. After I graduated, I was able to combine my studies and my skills learned from school and experience in the field, to come up with the business that I have today. I provide skin care services such as specified facials, full body waxing and full faced makeup applications in my home based treatment room. My goal is to have each client leave with confidence and feeling elevated which is a part of why I decided on my business name “Elegance Beauty Bar”. By educating my clients while providing a unique and relaxing experience, I am able to help my clients get the best out of their service and leave with real results. For every service I provide I use top quality products that I have researched and tested on myself to ensure it is safe for my clients. I also provide free skin care consultations to anyone needing some advice on how to start their journey in this beautiful industry. Overall I consider becoming an esthetician the best decision of my life and I absolutely love what I do!
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
The best source for new clients for me has always been word of mouth. I usually give my clients business cards to take home and they have links to my website to share to others who are interested in checking out my business and/or booking an appointment.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
The most effective strategy for me for growing my clientele would have to be is social media and attending social events where I can pass my cards out to strangers. With social media I try to keep all my pages updated with content and videos that are educational and entertaining. By attending social events and passing out my cards I have been able to get appointments booked on the spot and establish a good first impression that has made a loyal client.
