We recently connected with Jeniffer Flores and have shared our conversation below.
Jeniffer, appreciate you joining us today. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
Life is about taking risks, right? And looking back at every choice I’ve made (leaving my country and move to Lo Angeles, Studying Acting, working as an actress in different industries) freaked me out. But not every choice has to be a big one to count as a rick, even the little ones influence in our daily lives, and we need to be smart enough to learn everything. Some people think studying acting, or something related to the arts it a bigger risk, but honestly, I think every profession is a risk, the only thing we are certain off is death, we’re not promised to be a successful artist at 25, or have your first movie before turning 3o, or traveling around the world for work, owning a house, Everything takes time, and discipline to make it make it happen, so we might as well like it because the journey might be bumpy. We’re not so different, at the end of the day, i think we all want to live a peaceful and happy life (whatever that means for you). So, let’s take risks, that’s how we learn about ourselves and improve.

Jeniffer, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I was born and raised in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. When I turned eighteen I made the choice to move to Los Angeles to study acting in Stella Adler. It was the most amazing experience ever, I learned a lot, met lots of people and started working as an actress, I’ve done tons of short-films and lately i’ve been lucky enough to work for T.v shows in México, where I also filmed a movie and got to play the lead. It’s been quite a journey, i want to keep practicing, and learning, right now I’m applying in a film school so i can understand more about directing. I would love to absorb as much information as possible of what I love the most, movies.
We’ve all talked about how this career takes patience and discipline but if I’m totally honest, what I think it’s the most important part about being an artist, it’s believing in yourself. At least that’s what has gotten me through it.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Just as we’ve been talking, acting asks from you to be patient and to believe in yourself, no matter how bad things are. I’m sure every artist has gone through this but we don’t like to talk about it, maybe because we’re ashamed, we compare ourselves and we start wondering if we ever made right choice or “risk” but one time i got a call from my agent and she told me that I booked the project i had just audition for, that they loved me, and that i had to pack my bags because next day I had to travel to Cancun. Instantly, I got super excited, i was so happy because i was gonna be able to travel for work, i was gonna get paid and i was gonna quit my job, as a waitress, you guessed it!
Thirty minutes later, I got another call from my agent and she told me they changed their minds, and went with the other option. I was devastated, it was the first time that ever happen to me and i just couldn’t handle it. I wanted to quit acting, I thought i was never gonna be good enough, no matter how hard i worked because there was always gonna be another option.Long story short, I didn’t, and i’m glad because i love acting, and honestly this is just part of it, we don’t have to be to be so hard on ourselves.

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
Most people who start working in the industry have a very narrow point of view on how we earn money, because we think we can only earn it from our art, in my case, acting. I used to think i could only earn money from acting, and commercials didn’t count as acting. The most important lesson for me to unlearn, was to be more open and realize i could earn money from other things rather than just acting, right now i have an actor’s studio in Mexico City and we help actors and actresses to keep working on their craft. It doesn’t have to be related to acting or the industry, I could start doing tarot readings if I wanted to. My point here is, there’s nothing wrong on trying other things to earn money, that doesn’t make you any less successful artist, it’s just part of life, everything takes time.
