We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jenifer Pastor a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jenifer, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Often outsiders look at a successful business and think it became a success overnight. Even media and especially movies love to gloss over nitty, gritty details that went into that middle phase of your business – after you started but before you got to where you are today. In our experience, overnight success is usually the result of years of hard work laying the foundation for success, but unfortunately, it’s exactly this part of the story that most of the media ignores. Can you talk to us about your scaling up story – what are some of the nitty, gritty details folks should know about?
We started You Melt Me as a very basic business of selling and creating only one size of wax melts. As we grew, we added wax warmers, fun and different sizes of wax melts and options for wholesale. From there, we really wanted to utilize our phthalate and toxin free fragrances by creating new products.
That pushed us to create mini freshers which are small air fresheners for cars.
We then created room and linen sprays and now we make our own shower steamers!
The same great scents we have in our original wax melts can now be found in a variety of products.
Jenifer, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am a stay at home Mom due to my husband’s work schedule and my son’s busy school and sports schedule. I’m also a proud PTO board member at my kiddo’s school.
This small business has allowed me to be available for my family as well as allowing me a creative outlet. I love when customers ask me to duplicate a scent that they love that has been discontinued. I love researching them and how I can create it for them in a product.
I also love when customers approach me with an idea of a product they’d like to sell in their store. I love creating custom labels and scents for them.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
I always feel like the business is failing when we are slow. I self doubt myself alot. My husband always tells me to remember, it’s a marathon, not a sprint.
It’s hard to tackle doubt. Then, I’ll have a customer tell me we are the only wax melts they buy! I must be doing something right!
We’d love to hear about how you met your business partner.
This business was started by my husband. During covid, he needed something to do as a side hobby. He started making candles, but in out household, there is either a dog or a kid running around and I didn’t like the idea of an open flame. So my husband started making wax melts, and we started giving them away as gifts.
People really liked them and he taught me how to do it and we started You Melt Me.
