We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jenifer Guinn a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jenifer, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today How do you think about vacations as a business owner? Do you take them and if so, how? If you don’t, why not?
Most definitely without a doubt! Vacations were an essential part of being a CEO! Work hard play hard! I remember once I met a CEO of several companies and this person NEVER takes a vacation ! I was appauled! Burnout is the main cause of heat attack and stroke! Which is why it is imperative you care for your self mentally physically and emotionally due to the fact that in the end your work and life will suffer. The person’s reasoning wasn’t even reasonable they said they were TOO BUSY. If there too busy for self care there is a problem!
Always make time for self care it’s essential, if you don’t your business will eventually see the effects from it. Vacationing doesn’t always have to be a lavish trip to the islands. It can be as simple as taking a spa day or going to the local beach. Your mind needs a vacation along with your body and it will show eventually if you don’t.

Jenifer, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am Jenifer Guinn, MSc. I have a Master’s degree in Social Psychology from Walden University I am a graduate of Bowie State University c/o 2006. In addition I am a mother of one son who is 12, I have two puppies and I enjoy helping others through flavor and foods. I am the sole manufacturer and creator of my product Vidaluxlook from the labels to the website to the oil blends. I wanted to give families a household name that can bring excitement and flavor for their kitchen and palates on a consistent basis with my cooking oils. They are healthy nutritious and have many benefits for everyone! Cooking is a form of self love and care, therefore I trust myself before I trust someone else to cook for me! We also produce meal prep and delivery to the elderly and sick and shut in!

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
Back pre pandemic I was only providing services for elderly individuals who weren’t visible online and or needed assistance with promo. Not until I joined an online entrepenuer menrorship, did I get the product idea instead. By that time, a lot more people were ready and willing to do their own websites and promotions which I could see so I proceeded to pivot to a marketable product line instead. I started playing with different oils spices and flowers that were for medicinal purposes. I gave them away as gifts one Christmas and my family convo fed me that these oils were marketable and should be sold seriously. This was a great idea alright it was simply a hobby initially however it has hence become a passion of mine to help and heal others via food therapy.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Experiencing a loss as well as addiction can be traumatizing…. And as a result my business was impacted. The pandemic caused me to make decisions that impacted me today. Enduring a separation, which is same as grieving a loss can be daunting to one’s health mentally and physically. I cooked three times a day for my family during this time and it was always about food! On top of that, shortly after giving birth, I was prescribed two different sets of ‘pain pills’ by my primary care this resulted into me being addicted to them I was luckily able to get off them which help from friends because it was taking over every aspect of my life in every way. I tried to mask the pain with a temporary relief but I have since realize that I have to get to the root of the issue to successfully resolve it. Taking a detox and using God to guide me in the right direction helped me immensely! I know this sounds elementary however you don’t see yourself until you see yourself meaning your out of that triggering traumatic situation and your mind is clear. I am so grateful for being resilient and also finally really focusing on my product not just as a hobby but as a authentic genuine household brand!
