Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jenica Peterson. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Jenica, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
Nathan bought a pool company that was a disaster. The books were a mess, taxes hadn’t been paid in years and people were months behind on their install. When he and his business partner split up, Nathan said he wanted to keep the pool business but not as the mess it was. That’s when Kamea Pools was born. He has strived to be the most honest contractor you could possibly have. There are lots of questions and issues that can happen when you’re doing a huge construction project like this, but he makes sure all the issues are corrected and don’t happen again. There are also a lot of horror stories of pool contractors taking people’s money and not finishing a job. That absolutely will not happen at Kamea Pools. We safe guard people’s money that they have either saved a life time for or take out another loan that they will pay over their lifetime. We take our job very seriously and want people to be happy and excited about the project, not the other way around.

Jenica, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Kamea Pools got started when Nathan’s partnership was ending and he made the choice to continue installing pools. What sets Kamea apart from the rest of the contractors is that he actually follows through with what he says he is going to do, he never ups his price from what you signed and agreed on day one, he fixes issues that are present in someone’s backyard, like drainage ect., he also has set up a special savings account that he puts peoples deposits into and he only uses people’s money for their own project, not someone else’s. Kamea offers alot of options for install from water features, to deck jets, to a slide, ect. One of the most custom items we provide is a cover that has a walk on lid. Most covers are covered with an aluminum lid, but Kamea pours concrete pieces that fit perfectly over your cover so you can’t see it when it’s open. It’s completely custom to each pool and through all the parade of homes we’ve went to, we have never seen a cover like ours!

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
There was a pool we installed that had problems from the very beginning. We install fiberglass shells that have to get shipped from a manufacturing plant. The first pool was hit by a semi resulting in having to get a new shell made. This project also had bad soils which we had to do an over-ex to fix. We jack hammered out 2 massive layers of rock and then backfill the hole. (This was completely unncessary but we did it to comply with the city permit.) After the pool was installed, the city came back and said we had to now install a liner under our pool. We had to rip out the pool and to do this and re-install. Later on, the homeowner started to build a casita next to their pool. The other contractor dug a trench next to our pool which made our pool drop and crack. We went out and fixed the problem without asking the owner to pay more money. We finally finished our pool and landscape project but the homeowner wanted have their casita contractor install the gas line. He didn’t get is installed for almost 4 months and then when he did, he didn’t install a big enough line and it was plugged. The homeowner wanted us to fix the problem. The install was completed in October and this line didn’t get installed until February the next year. The reason I tell this story is because every single day, Nathan got up and went to work to get this project done, mind you in 117 degree southern Utah heat. With every obstacle that came up, our guys went to work. We lost a lot of money on this project! And the worst part about it is, it’s the only project that we got a 2 star google review. We did everything in our power to get this project done knowing timelines were being missed and over budget. I only wish the homeowners knew how much we did for them that normal contractors (like the one they highered for their casita that tried to cut corners) that they would see how wrong their google review is.
It’s the biggest project we’ve ever done where we learned many lessons the hard way.

Can you open up about a time when you had a really close call with the business?
We had finished the massive project (that was previously talked about) and the owners wouldn’t pay us their final pool bill and their landscape bill which was around $40k. Our bank accounts were low and we were at a point where we didn’t know exactly what to do. We like to pray around here and it was a miracle we got them to pay just in time for payroll and the other projects to start!
