We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jenesys King. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jenesys below.
Hi Jenesys, thanks for joining us today. Do you think your parents have had a meaningful impact on you and your journey?
Growing up in a single parent household being the oldest of three younger brothers, I often felt like I had to take the role of the second parent. I started looking after my brothers alone at a really early age, and this forced me to grow up fast and try to involve myself in things that weren’t beneficial to me, I believe my mother saw that I needed an outlet early on. Even though I was still at my local school, my mom enrolled me in an extracurricular art class downtown that I would go to after school. This made me feel seen. At this extra curricular art class at a facility called Space One Eleven in Birmingham, Alabama, my art was taken to the next level at just eleven years old. There, they helped me create my very own portfolio to apply to the Alabama School of Fine Arts, where I studied from seventh grade to senior year as a Visual Arts major. Initially this was not something I wanted to do, as I had “friends” at my local school that I did not want to leave. When I got my acceptance email to ASFA while sitting with my mom at Yogurt Mountain my mom was over the moon but I secretly was not. Of course I warmed up to ASFA as I found my true family, my passion, and was trained and allowed to blossom as an artist.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I’m Jenesys “FairyGodJenn” King. FairyGodJenn is an internet persona I occasionally go by and solely introduced myself as for many years. Now I usually just go by Jenesys pronounced (Genesis) I’m usually present on instagram (@jenesys111) where I influence and am apart of a community of about 3,000 like minded earthlings! My post span from my THREE Cats, to, streaming Sims4 gameplay, to photo edits that’ll leaving you wondering if I’m a human or an actual fairy in outer-space! I’m a multi-hyphenated artist demonstrated through 10+ years of professional visual art experience, NFT and social media content creation, and branding. I’ve taught kids as an art teacher, and even illustration a kids book. I have a portfolio link available where you can find folders that include work from many years of meeting local entrepreneurs, music artist, and business owners who want to take their business to the next level but may not have a creative direction or vision in mind, and need someone to produce something eye-catching to bring awareness! This is demonstrated through logos, huge murals, t-shirt designs, business cards, event flyers, banners, etc.! (https://kingjenesys1.myportfolio.com) My experience also spans to creative directing digital media, management, photography, and album visuals for growing musicians. I am a graduate of the Alabama School of Fine Arts and studied graphic design at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. I’m super passionate about spiritual healing and hosting intimate, cozy, and tight knit events with my mom TeaTay King at TeaTay’s TeaRoom that bring community together, and highlight local creatives. Lastly, I’ve spent the most recent summers doing automotive conversion arts where I converted and refurbished a 1999 Chevrolet vans into a comfortable living space. (Can send pictures if needed)
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
I give gratitude to my family, friends, closest supporters, teachers, and other influences that have spoken life into my journey along the way, so of course I want to repay them. I also find great fulfillment in creating art for local business owners, but my ultimate goal is to be able to wake up every day and paint and draw what I want from the heart. With no time constraints, or due dates, or preferred mediums, or commissions, just me and the canvases in my studio. With free will to create what I want, and not have to rely on my creativity for income.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
The biggest pivot in my life happened during the pandemic in 2020, when I was going into my third year at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and realized majoring in Studio Art from home was not fulfilling me. I had to have faith in myself that I was equipped enough to drop out of college and rely on commission work. Even though family members and friends had given thousands of dollars for me to go to school, I knew that I would prevail and a graphic design degree wouldn’t justify or validate me anymore as the astounding visual artist that I know I am.
