Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jenecia Brown. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Jenecia, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Let’s jump to the end – what do you want to be remembered for?
The type of legacy I hope to build is one that will live on many generations after I am gone. I want to be remembered for the seeds I planted to help others. My goal is to build an empire with my business and music that doesn’t just benefit my needs, but also fill the needs of the people I will serve. To lead is to serve. My goal is to not just have charitible entities that give, but actually help people to help themselves. Success to me is not that I have the biggest business in my genre with lots of money. Success to me is when I reach the platform to make a difference, that I do so will all my might. A lot of successul people use their platforms for selfish reasons and forget to appreciate the consumers buying their products or services. Having a business is to fulill a need. I believe in quality over quantity. This means quality products, quality staff, every link in the empire must be strong and dedicated to the same mission. My mission is to keep hope alive and spread love through my music and business. I want to leave something that my children can pass down to their children and so on. I want them to remember the struggle and the sacrifices it took to build my empire. I want them to remember the days where I thought I could not go on, and remember the importance of never giving up. I think people will say that I always remained humble and true to myself and always stood on truth no matter the cost. I dedicate my all to everything I do, and I believe that my legacy will be fulfilled even more than I can imagine.
Jenecia, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Jenecia Brown also known as BabyDol. I am from Mississippi, but I now reside in the Metro Atlanta, Georgia area. I am a licensed master cosmetologist and musician (singer/songwriter). I have a business called Jenicia’s Hair Salon Mobile Hair and Makeup Services. I provide hair, makeup, and styling services to local areas. I have loved doing hair and makeup since I was in high school. I obtained my Master Cosmetolgy License in Georgia in March of 2022. I found working in someone else’s salon didn’t best suite me. Therefore, I decided to work for myself. I have gained many clients and found some like it better in the comfort of their own home. I did obtain a salon suite at one point but it didn’t fit my needs as expected which was a learning experience. I do hope to obtain a salon suite in 2024 that meets my needs, and still maintain the mobile services aspect of my business as well. I am currently pursuing a medical wig certification, so I can offer medical wigs as an extension of my business as well in 2024.
I started pursuing music professionally in 2010, and my main genre is r&b. Although I have had my ups and downs in the music industry, I am thankful to still be able to pursue my passion. I have learned alot, and I am working on launching an EP Summer of 2024.
What sets me apart from others, is my drive and dedication to my crafts. Regardless of the obstacles or personal finacial situations I am currently experiencing, I am still going. Nothing worth having will come easy. I treat my clients how they would want to be treated, and give quality service. It’s easy to set a price and treat my services like numbers, but my clients are more than numbers. My client is a mother that just found out she had stage 4 cancer, a daughter that needs a hair service for her mother who had a stroke, or a man whose wife got sick that use to maintain his hair and needs my services. I am blessed to be able to have what I call not just a business but a ministry. I am blessed to be able to put my heart in my music and spread positive music that touches hearts.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I actually have so many of these, but I will share what I am currently facing which is housing for my kids and I. I am a single mother, and I have no family here in Georgia. I became homeless in Cosmetology School when I was a couple months away from being finished because I got laid off from a work from home contract and had to get another job. I wasn’t employed in time, and I had to choose between keeping my car and finishing cosmetology school or keeping my apartment. I chose to keep my car and finish cosmetology school. The rent assistance didn’t come until after I moved into the hotel with my kids. It was tough because the hotels are expensive, so we were not in the best conditions as the hotel was cheap. However, I kept going to school and graduated 2 weeks early. I passed both my state board exams the next month and obtained my master cosmetology license. All of this I did while homeless. I tried to work in a couple salons but it just wasn’t enough as I had to door dash as well. There were a few days I pulled to the Ihop restaurant and slept in the back of the parking lot. After those days God blessed me with help to get a hotel room. I started working for myself while door dashing and started building my clientele. I was able to get out the hotels on November of 2022. However the person I trusted to rent their basement apartment, has put me through so much I can’t even put everything into words. I was not in a lease, but it is a lot of conditions my kids and I have been subjected to that haven’t been fixed. I almost lost my car when it broke down because I was spending money on Lyft rides to reach my clients. However, I kept going and got the money to fix my car. I had a good friend from Mississippi who belives in me that helped me with my car payment so I wouldn’t lose it by the grace of God. It has been so depressing because we are still in this basement apartment waiting for me to earn enough to get us out of here, while still mainting my business. However, I have not given up and I have been blessed even with this opportunity to share this with you that are reading now. When everthing was the darkest, I kept my faith and kept pushing. That to me hands down illustrates my resilience. I believe 2024 will be a big year for me, and I am determined to reach my goals of building my empire.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
The most effective strategy for growing my clientele is word of mouth. When my client is happy, they usually tell me about a friend that needs their hair done too and it just builds from there. I also represent my services everywhere I go. This means I keep my hair and make-up fixed. Someone always stops me to compliment me, and I give them my information.
