We recently connected with Jena Poston and have shared our conversation below.
Jena, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
During the pandemic I was journaling and had a vision about having my own empire. I knew working for myself was the only option. I began planning and thinking of ways to actually create a brand for myself. In the summer of 2021 I launched Jenaration Marketing. The idea started because I studied marketing and wanted to apply the knowledge I was given. In the beginning I claimed immediately that I wanted to have a brand strong enough to pass down to my kids. This to me is what generational wealth should look like. Which pushed me even further to want to be seen as a resource for other business owners. This is the idea for my mission statement of the desire to push your brand to the next generation!
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am from Winston Salem, NC. When I first went to college I wanted to be a veterinarian. I started at East Carolina University when I decided to study business. When I began studying marketing it was something I knew would be valuable. It took me some time to like social media because I will admit I used to hate it. In the summer of 2019 I did an unpaid internship at a gym facility. This experience made me realize I loved what I was doing because I was willing to do it for free. Being a part of people’s business journeys has been a fun experience for me. Starting in 2022 I started becoming a brand ambassador for clients. I continue building my portfolio by modeling services and products. This role has really helped me come out of my comfort zone. As I continue on my journey, I really push for mental health and incorporate spirituality in my life. I try to find different ways to live in a happy state of mind.
Any thoughts, advice, or strategies you can share for fostering brand loyalty?
I personally build relationships with each of my clients. I provide my devoted attention based on my clients needs. My clients message me daily for guidance on their brand which helps me build brand loyalty. Every partnership I have had has been collaborative to create a customizable experience. Being able to be a part of people’s business journey is the best thing about what I do. With the relationships I have with my clients I place them in rooms to build more connections and help promote them on my own personal page. I also allow my clients to freely brainstorm their ideas to create a road map to their success. I am willing to give support which is the best strategy for brand loyalty.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
They’re so many lessons I could address. But a lesson I’ve had to unlearn is tolerating sexual harassment in the work place. Being a woman you are continuously being sexualized. The one thing I had to learn was being able to lose business opportunities based on how I am respected and treated. At almost every job I’ve experienced a moment of feeling uncomfortable in the workplace. This was something I thought I had to put up with if I wanted to be successful. I personally had a situation happen to me when I was 22 years old during my last semester of college. This moment changed my life. I had an opportunity to work at a recording studio and at that time I thought this was something that was going to change my life for the better. I quickly lost control of my life. This moment broke me and isolated me at a level I wouldn’t wish on an enemy. I believe this became part of my journey to be in the position I am today. When I developed Jenaration Marketing it was shortly after I left this experience. I chose myself and rebuilt the woman I am today. From my mistakes I continuously advocate for other women and pour into others around me. Eventually I will tell my story fully when the time is right. But for the time being I did a Halloween photoshoot portraying the music artist, Aaliyah. Her story will never be forgotten and is something I had no idea I would similarly relate to. As I push myself everyday I will always remind myself how far I’ve come. I am thankful every single day to make it out and have the ability to inspire others to keep pushing towards their goals.
