Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jena DreamFyre. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Jena, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
I took my very first Pole Dance class in 2012 while looking for an alternative way to work out. I never expected pole dance to take over my life like it did. Since then, I have dedicated the majority of my time to learn the art of pole dance and other aerial arts like the Lyra. In 2016 I started my 5 year journey of competing and learned so much more about my craft. The biggest lesson I learned through this competitive journey with pole dance, was to be myself and let it show on stage. The more I dove into my authentic being, the more I won and had fun doing it. In 2019 I traveled to NYC to perform and complete at the Symphony Space theater for one of the biggest pole dance competitions in the world. This was the third time I had tried this competition and never placed… never took home my official “pro status”. I remember doubting myself behind stage during the award ceremony, thinking I had failed again. They were calling everyone’s names but mine it felt like. I thought to myself, “I must be very last on the scorecards”. Turns out, they were calling names in a different order so when they called my name on stage I was so shocked and happy, I did not even realize I had won 3rd place in my division and my official Pro Status finally. I still have the video of me looking like a big smiling goof ball on stage. I was so distracted with the excitement of placing that I forgot to go to the front of the stage to get my medal. oops! After they put the medal around my neck, I was interviewed by the New York Times on my dance journey and what it was like achieving these goals as a mother of 2. Something I am super proud of. It’s been over a decade of learning, teaching, and sharing my love for pole, aerial, and dance with others. I hope to never stop learning!
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I got into the Pole Dance Industry when I decided to leave my hometown of Cape Cod and try my very first pole dance competition in Florida. On Cape Cod, there isn’t much of a pole dance community impacting the industry very much, I knew I needed to leave Massachusetts entirely in order to get more involved and get my name out there. After taking on a few performances and competitions, I decided to get officially certified and take teaching this art more seriously. I went from running pole and dance classes in local gyms to having owned and operated 2 pole dance studios. Pin Up Pole & Dance Boutique Is my forever private home studio where I teach others. I offer many types of alternative dance styles and competition training for pole dance, Flexibility training, Aerial arts like Lyra, Burlesque, and Chair Dance. Teaching private lessons 6 days a week, small group classes, workshops, and even virtual classes to students all over the country. A specialty of mine is teaching my very special Pop Up Pole Parties. These are mostly bachelorette parties where I bring my freestanding pole with me to clients house, hotels, rentals and more. I basically show up with my equipment, teach everyone how to pole dance, and then perform for the whole group to the Bride-to-be’s favorite song. I go all out and really make these parties something unique and unforgettable, I am so proud this side to my business as it feeds me soul to make these wonderful and edgy memories happen for people visiting the Cape. Nothing beats pole dancing with your friends outside with an ocean view!
My clients come to me for various reasons but most that are signing up lessons have never done it before. People from all different walks of life want to try pole and dance with me because they are looking to spice up their life, some want a workout just like I did when I first started, and some clients who have previous experience come to me because they need help on their journey or with certain tricks they just are not nailing yet. I have a knack for dissecting tricks and choreographies, explaining them in many different ways so all minds can understand. I am most proud of the confidence I help flourish in people and the awakening of sensuality through movement.
I think what I want people to know most about what I offer is that ANYONE can do this. It’s never too late to start. I know it can be scary starting something like pole dance when it’s still so taboo, but I promise, there’s magic in what I do. My classes are very different than your typical pole fitness studio. I actually don’t even like calling what I do fitness anymore. It’s Dance. and Dance feeds the soul!
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
I think there is still such a stigma when It comes to pole dance. It can be hard to understand for those that have not experienced what it’s like. As someone who has been involved in this industry for over 12 years, I have learned that I actually really enjoy the fact that pole dance is this way still. It is not main stream and it hasn’t been in the Olympics. I prefer for it not to be. It’s strange to me that for some, it has to be kept sport like in order to gain their approval. Pole is very special the way it is. I think some people get very scared of tapping into their sensual selves and pole dance will get you diving right into it. This topic is very interesting to me as I find most are so curious about getting more in touch with their sensual selves and do not know where to find it. Some like myself are mothers, some are gender fluid, some have never looked at themselves in the mirror in a sexy way ! I pride myself of helping all my clients find their sensual selves and love what they see in the mirror. There aren’t many other forms of dance near Cape Cod at all offering sensual/erotic movement let alone pole dance. I think it is also really important for people to know that pole dance can be whatever you want it to be. Some do comedy skits with is, some do contemporary , some prefer to not be sexy at all with it and that is ok. We are all just trying to find what makes us happy and wow, Pole Dancers are happy people. We go for our dreams! We fall many times and always get back up. I could say so much more about Pole and Aerial…I am very passionate about the art. I am stoked to be able to provide my services and spark that flame inside all of us. Pole Dance and Aerial has helped so many people!
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of my art and creative journey with pole and aerial is being able to share it with others and support my family doing what I love. When I see my students come in for the first time to try Pole or Lyra and they think they cannot do it. Most of the time , they will even say it out loud to me. “I can’t do this.” before they have even tried. I prove them wrong every time! The look in their eyes when I get them to achieve it and actually do it is priceless! To my students reading this, You Got This and you can do anything you put your mind to. Allow yourselves to make mistakes and grow. Never give up.
