Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jen Munson. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Jen, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
Tin Roof Candle Co. was born out of a personal experience during my own challenge with covid pneumonia. During that period, I discovered the powerful healing properties of scent and the importance of creating a peaceful, comforting space to escape from the chaos of the world. The simple act of lighting a candle became a source of comfort, a reminder of self-care, and a way to nurture my mental well-being.
With this newfound appreciation for the small joys in life, I set out to share the healing power of scent with others. At Tin Roof Candle Co., every candle is hand-poured with love and care, designed to create a welcoming, cozy atmosphere that allows you to unwind, relax, and enjoy a mini escape right in the comfort of your own space. We believe in the importance of surrounding yourself with things that bring joy. Whether you are seeking a rustic, joyful, moody or comforting fragrance, each candle is crafted to inspire self-care, relaxation, and a deeper connection to the warmth of home.
Through thoughtfully crafted candles and gifts, Tin Roof Candle Co. aims to inspire you to slow down, recharge, and enjoy the simple pleasures of life—because sometimes, all it takes is a little light and fragrance to transform your space into a sanctuary.

Jen, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Tin Roof Candle Co., a candle and gift boutique born out of a transformative experience. A few years ago, I was hospitalized for a month and spent five days on a ventilator, a life-changing time that made me reevaluate what truly matters. During my recovery, I discovered the healing power of scent—how certain fragrances could help me find peace, comfort, and a sense of calm amidst the chaos.
After a candle making experience with my sister in law, this ignited a passion for creating products that help others experience that same sense of serenity. I wanted to offer candles that weren’t just about scent, but about creating a space of self-care, relaxation, and escape. That’s how Tin Roof Candle Co. was born—out of the desire to provide something meaningful and comforting that could help people unwind and connect with themselves.
All of our candles are made with 100% US-farmed soy, cotton wicks, and clean burning fragrances. We take pride in using sustainable, eco-friendly materials that provide a cleaner, longer burn—so you can feel good about what you’re bringing into your home. Our commitment to quality and craftsmanship ensures that every candle is not only a treat for the senses, but also a responsible choice for your environment.
In addition to offering our hand-poured soy candles and gifts, I’m proud to provide a unique experience with our Make Your Own Candle Bar. This interactive experience allows customers to create their own personalized candle blends, choosing from a variety of scents and candle jars. Whether it’s for a special gift, a fun activity with friends, or a self-care treat, our candle bar offers a chance to make something truly unique to you.
Each candle is hand-poured with love and intention, designed to fill your space with rustic, cozy vibes and soothing fragrances. Whether you’re looking for something joyful, moody, or comforting, our candles are crafted to enhance your environment and encourage moments of self-care. Every product is made with care, using high-quality, sustainable materials, and we take pride in offering a personalized touch that makes each candle feel special.
What sets me apart is the personal journey behind the brand. I understand firsthand how important it is to have things in your space that bring you peace and comfort, especially during challenging times. Tin Roof Candle Co. isn’t just a business—it’s an extension of my own journey, and I’m honored to be part of your self-care rituals.
I’m incredibly proud of the small business I’ve built and the way it’s allowed me to share something that helped me heal, with others. My hope is that each candle brings you a moment of calm, a space for self-care, and a connection to the things you love.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Absolutely. One of the most defining moments of my resilience came when I was faced with a life-changing health battle. A few years ago, I was hospitalized for a month and spent five days on a ventilator. Within those five days, I woke up on the ventilator. At that time, only one family member was allowed to visit. It was hard being away from my kids and I was very isolated. That time was incredibly challenging, and I had to rely on my strength and perseverance to push through. It was during this recovery that I learned how essential self-care is, and how something as simple as a comforting scent can bring peace and healing.
When I first started Tin Roof Candle Co., I never anticipated the challenges that come with running a small business, especially in a small town like Annandale, MN. The winters here can be brutal, and that can make things tough when you rely on foot traffic. But instead of letting those slow months discourage me, I got creative. I started thinking outside the box—finding new ways to connect with customers, offering unique experiences like our Make Your Own Candle Bar, and focusing on building a strong community around my brand.
It’s not always easy. There are times when I feel like I’m on a rollercoaster, with the highs of success and the lows of setbacks, but I’ve learned that resilience isn’t just about pushing through the tough times; it’s about finding new ways to adapt and grow. Every challenge I face has pushed me to get more creative, learn new skills, and stay connected to the passion that started it all.
The road hasn’t been without its bumps, but I am proud of how far I’ve come. Each step, whether big or small, has been a reminder that resilience is built in the moments when we keep moving forward, no matter the obstacles in our path.

How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
When I first decided to start Tin Roof Candle Co., I knew I had a dream that I was passionate about, but I also knew that funding a small business was a big challenge. The initial step was incredibly humbling, as I had to ask for help from the people I trust most.
I can’t say enough about how much I owe to my family—they truly believed in me and my vision from the very beginning. Their unwavering support was invaluable, and I’m beyond grateful for their encouragement and belief in this dream, even when things seemed uncertain. I can’t tell you how many times I drove home in tears-wondering what I was doing?
Another key part of making Tin Roof Candle Co. a reality was the support I received from Lake Central Bank in Annandale. They took the time to really listen to my story and saw the potential in my business. Their belief in my dream and willingness to help with a loan was a game-changer. With their support, I was able to take the next step in making my vision come true.
And of course, I can’t leave out my incredible customers, who have become like friends along the way. I am so grateful to have built a community of people who not only support my business but also share in the journey with me. Whether it’s hearing their stories, seeing the joy on their faces when they find the perfect candle, or simply knowing they’ve chosen to spend their time and money supporting me, their belief in Tin Roof Candle Co. has been a huge part of my success.
Starting a business takes a village, and I’m so fortunate to have had that support from both my family and Lake Central Bank. Their belief in me allowed me to move forward and turn Tin Roof Candle Co. from an idea into the small business I am so proud of today.
