We recently connected with Jen Maddock and have shared our conversation below.
Jen , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Parents can play a significant role in affecting how our lives and careers turn out – and so we think it’s important to look back and have conversations about what our parents did that affected us positive (or negatively) so that we can learn from the billions of experiences in each generation. What’s something you feel your parents did right that impacted you positively.
My parents were both business owners, and they did a lot of things right. They instilled the value of hard work in me. It was not uncommon to see them working unconventional hours and doing whatever it took to improve sales. My dad had his own restaurant for over 30 years, and my mom is a realtor. They both have had challenges, but they’ve both been successful because of their strong worth ethics. Because of them, I never give up. This has been especially beneficial for my position with BabyQuip. It’s not easy to come into an existing business and try to find your niche. I’ve worked behind the scenes to get my name out there and have had a lot of success in my first year.

Jen , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
BabyQuip is the number one baby gear rental service in the United States. There are over 1200 quality providers, and the company is rapidly expanding. I am one of the providers serving St. Louis and Illinois. I have an inventory of baby gear in my home (cribs, car seats, Pack ‘N Plays, SlumberPods, strollers, video monitors, and more), and I help local families try before they buy or borrow something for grandma’s so they don’t have to lug all their own baby equipment. I also help families traveling to St. Louis who may need a car seat or crib or local families who are hosting out of town relatives with children. I offer delivery and setup, as well as free pick up.
It’s hard to travel with kids, but we make it a little bit easier. We provide the comforts of home, so you can pack light and travel happy. And we also follow safety standards and have thorough sanitation practices, so you can feel confident in the gear you are renting.
As a mom of two littles myself, I have traveled and left my sleep up to chance. I expected my oldest son would sleep anywhere because we needed our sole Pack ‘N Play for baby brother! That was the first time my son saw the moon at night; none of us slept. I didn’t know about BabyQuip at the time, but I will NOT travel without renting from them now!
I love helping other families avoid my same mistake. There’s nothing more rewarding than easing the burden of travel so families can focus on making memories instead of worrying about sleep or car safety.
BabyQuip has been such a blessing to my family. I quit my full-time position to stay home with my compromised son during the pandemic, and BabyQuip has helped my family tremendously. I don’t think people realize when they rent a crib, they are doing more than just ensuring a good night sleep for their family. Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
The pandemic forced me to make some shifts in my career. After trying to juggle working from home and childcare, I had to leave a position to stay home to keep my compromised son safe. I still had a strong desire to work and contribute to my family financially, so I was so grateful to find out about BabyQuip. Not having a traditional 9-5 was very new to me. I thought BabyQuip would be a temporary solution, but I genuinely love helping families make their trips with kids easier.

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I think my attention to detail and customer service have helped me to build a reputation in this market. I am a perfectionist, so I strive to make sure my gear is in tip top condition. I also have a compromised son, so I know how important it is for gear to be sanitary. I want to give every family the same experience I would hope to have as a customer myself. I overly communicate so customers feel comfortable and confident through the entire rental process.
