We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jen Lowrance. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jen below.
Alright, Jen thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?
I don’t believe it’s one thing…. Everyone has to have a inner drive, a strong “why”, impeccable work ethic, passion for excellence in their craft and can see the big picture no matter where they are in the hustle to measure “success”. It was shared with me years ago that
“Excellence breeds passion. Passion breeds Success”. It stuck with me and feel if you have to truly measure, that’s your equation!
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
In 2001, I started as a sales and event coordinator for Bella Terrazza at The Chef’s Table in the Galleria area. We hosted 4-5- weddings every weekend and my rotation was to work every other weekend. You can do the math — that’s ALOT of events in a short amount of time. With that, I shortened the learning curve on how to execute events. My highlight of my 3-years with their crazy team was vying and booking Nike for the 2004 Super Bowl – it was a week long contract with multiple daily events for the athletes and their families with the huge blow out party weekend of the Super Bowl. (this will age be quickly)… I used fax machine to send my request to locate who was the person to talk to on the planning committee to get an opportunity. The odds of my fax landing on the right desk at corporate headquarters was nothing short of a miracle but it did, and I got the site visit that turned into largest sale in our companies history!
In 2005, I decided to join Bill & Jorden Mahler to help design and build Briscoe Manor in Richmond, Texas. We were one of the 2nd venues in the Houston area to have a free standing private chapel that could accommodate up to 250-guests, create a grooms lounge (which is now a given in every private venue) and when our doors opened, I had over 65-weddings booked with no beautiful sketches or virtual rooms — all off a piece of paper, a few magazine photos as inspiration and me walking people through a field describing what it would look like! In short amount of time, we earned awards as the premier wedding venue in the Houston area. Not because the venue was thoughtfully designed on 55-beautiful acres but because our style of service and how we loved on our clients! After about 2-years, we started to build out our coordinating team which is now a business model many Texas area venues use to create their system.
In 2014, I created my own planning company in The Woodlands after taking a short break after my daughter was born. While having 2-kids under 3-years old, I built J Low Events one event at a time. Even though I had been in the Houston industry for over 10-years with vetted experience when I moved to The Woodlands, it was like starting over. And, starting over with 2-little ones at my feet which was a different pace than I was use too.
In the last couple years, I’ve been proud of several things within my career….
Building my reputation on referral which I feel is invaluable. Hiring a wedding planner is an investment and it means so much that clients trust me and value the investment — even during Covid and worldwind of economic times!
My largest wedding to date was in November of 2021. It was for a dear family at an elite country club in The Woodlands. For the most part, we completely constructed a venue in 3-days using one of our most dearly loved vendors / rental company. The owner of this company passed away during our planning process and his wife took over seamlessly and the JLE team executed a flawless event, with the help of our fabulous vendor village.
I took on a NYE wedding in 2021, something I wouldn’t typically due as I would be with my family. Designed to the nines and planned to perfection, surprise – a positive Covid test 3 days prior. Having built a veteran team of assists and lead planners, I was able to pass the baton off and trust that my clients would be in great hands.
Legacy brides – families that book for their 2nd daughter’s wedding, niece or cousin. LOVE when they keep it in the family – continuing the relationship and getting to see sweet family faces again.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I’ve worn many hats within the industry – from catering & sales manager, private venue event coordinator, to having built / developed an award-winning venue, managing a team of coordinators while running a venue while simultaneously executing events. By being involved in every facet of the reception floor, my clients trust my level of experience BUT more importantly, they know I care about their investment. I strive to keep my style of service personal and treat every event as my last (event after almost 20-years and over 1500 events). Our referrals are based on continuously making the client feel they were important and we cared about their investment. You can see on the steady 5-star reviews over the last 10-years.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
To see a vision come to life and how that vision curates true JOY! When the client can see that you heard them – every little detail – every part of what makes it THEIR event! Everyone has a story they want to share with others in their special day and when we can weave the colors, patterns, thoughtful details and even ideas that accidently evolved to make it unique….it’s the best feeling!
