We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jen Lancaster a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Jen thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What do you think it takes to be successful?
Being uncomfortable. Growth is scary! Change and fear of the unknown is what holds people back from being all they can be. There’s been so many times where I have had to do something I wasn’t comfortable with and I may have failed a few times, but I GREW from that, I LEARNED and have grown stronger and more successful in my ventures than before I got out of my comfort zone. That growth is what makes you successful both in your personal life and business. I always say to grow you must be uncomfortable because that means you are learning and moving forward, you are pushing the boundaries to go beyond what you think you can.
Jen, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Jen Lancaster. I am a Licensed Master Cosmetologist with almost 10 years under my belt. I am a Pulp Riot Educator and I get the amazing opportunity of traveling to educate fellow stylists about color and new techniques!
I opened my first salon in 2019 in the Raleigh NC area. I moved to Savannah in November of 2023 and have settled into this beautiful city and trying to making a name for myself. Spellbound Salon is my life, my safe space, and I aim to have it be a safe space for the people of Savannah as well. I am partnered with Strands for Trans and the salon is a registered safe space. Spellbound is a safe haven for those who feel they don’t fit in at other salons wether that be because of their aesthetic, gender identity, religion, skin color, etc.; they are welcomed with open arms here.
I aim to provide the highest quality of service, and provide a luxe but warm and fun environment. I specialize in color, specifically blondes and vivid hair colors, extensions, bridal hair and alternative styling and cutting, but I do it all! I love helping each guest that walks into my salon feel and look their best. You will never feel like a number or feel judged in my chair. All of my guests become an extended part of my family, we laugh together, cry together, spill all the latest internet tea. That is the Spellbound difference.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Honesty. I believe in being completely 10,000% transparent with each guest that sits in my chair. If I don’t think what they are asking me for will work with their face shape, lifestyle, or is just simply not achievable, I will tell them exactly that and give them options on what we can do. I explain every step of the process in what we are creating, always answer questions to the best of my ability and if I don’t know the answer I am honest and do my best to figure out that answer, I also give and honor price estimates for services so there is never a surprise at checkout.
With honestly comes responsibility and accountability. If I mess up, or drop the ball I will always own up to it and do my best to rectify the situation. I do my best to earn and keep the trust built between myself and every single guest that sits in my chair.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
Word of mouth! My clientele is fiercely loyal and they shout my name from the rooftops which I adore and it makes me feel so validated! Majority of my new guests come from referrals or they find me via instagram.
