Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jen Kruse. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Jen thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
I have tried a huge variety of different techniques when it comes to developing my style, but using markers and sharpies has been my favorite and I have built my website around that. Over time, I have used watercolors, acrylics, markers, and pencils, but I always find myself concluding that markers are where I want to spend my time. I began a simple project with sharpies in 2016, a piece that took 2 years of on and off work to create, but once this piece was created, I understood the flow and how I wanted to use markers to create wild shapes with brilliant colors.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My life as an artist began at age 3 with my first watercolor set. I began painting with my first professional set at age 8 and developed a passion for art over the years, selling my first painting at age 21. I have sold pieces to private collectors as well as businesses such as restaurants for public use. I currently sell prints on my website but am available always to do commissions, which is where the majority of my sales have come from. I specialize in vivid colors and wild shapes, but I simply have a passion for creating and delve into every area I can. Although my favorite specialty remains in marker work, I have a plethora of experience in other areas like acrylic painting and pencil work. My passion for creating beauty is the most important part of my business that I fight to keep alive. I want my clients to feel when they look at my work: to feel anything really: peace, joy, love, a sense of purpose. I realize my work consists mostly of bright colors and sometimes very abstract shapes, but I strive to maintain beauty in everything I create.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
There is indeed. Passion. My passion for creating, my passion for art, my passion for color. I want to share my passion with the world in the hopes that some of the joy I find in creating, some of the peace I find in colors, will spill out from my art and touch the soul of another person who witnesses my art on some level.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
It is most rewarding when I see my art moving or touching the heart of someone for whom I have created a piece or who has purchased one of my creations. When I get the chance to show my art directly to someone who has commissioned a piece and they get to see for the first time their vision come to life, I cannot think of anything more rewarding or motivating for me to continue in my journey of creating.
