We recently connected with Jen Dorf and have shared our conversation below.
Jen, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We love heartwarming stories – do you have a heartwarming story from your career to share?
During the COVID-19 lockdown, amidst the uncertainty and isolation, I stumbled upon a life-changing connection. Walking through the neighborhood daily, I met Barbara, a vibrant woman close to 90. She was spirited despite the grim circumstances. Sharing stories of her active lifestyle before lockdown, I learned of her passion for tennis, golf, and canasta and how deeply she missed those activities and social interactions.
Our chance encounter blossomed into a lovely friendship as we took regular walks together and I made weekly trips to the grocery store for her. Little did I know, Barbara lived behind us and had been watching my three daughters and me play on the trampoline for years, finding pleasure in our simple moments of joy. When she asked about my work, I shared my passion for teaching meditation to reduce stress and embrace uncertainty.
Inspired by Barbara’s suggestion, I began hosting complimentary meditation sessions on Zoom for her non-profit group. What started as a gesture of support quickly became a community of seniors seeking comfort and companionship. From there, I initiated a self-compassion group that has continued for three years, fostering close bonds and mutual support among its members.
Recently, we celebrated Barbara’s 90th birthday, a joyous occasion on which I finally met her family members, who expressed their appreciation for the comfort I provided during a challenging period in their mother’s life. Our connection remains strong which is a testament to the unexpected blessings from the pandemic. I’m grateful that Barbara came into my life and enriched it in ways I never imagined possible.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
For most of my life, I’ve suffered from anxiety, digestive issues, attention deficit disorder, exhaustion, achy joints, and disordered eating.
While I outwardly projected an aura of joy and vitality, internally, I was grappling with denial, a frenetic pace, self-flagellation, and a relentless focus on others’ needs over my own.
Two decades ago, I hit rock bottom. My debilitating joint pain and severe brain fog were unbearable. I could hardly pick up a glass of water or form a clear sentence.
A pivotal moment occurred when an orthopedist diagnosed me with fibromyalgia and prescribed Vioxx (an anti-inflammatory medicine later taken off the shelf as it caused heart attacks and strokes). A voice within me erupted! “No, I won’t take that!” And from there, I was propelled to reclaim control of my health.
From that moment onward, I embarked on a journey of healing and self-discovery. I immersed myself in the world of holistic health and wellness, earning certification as a Holistic Health and Wellness Coach. Delving into the transformative power of nutrition, neuroscience, and mindfulness, I discovered insights into the intricate world between mind, body, and spirit.
Guided by the wisdom of my mentor (mind-body physician), I discovered first-hand that our genes are only part of the story. Our environment and lifestyle choices dictate how genes are expressed. So, despite my family history of chronic anxiety and inflammatory illnesses, I rewrote my destiny. Thus, Jen Dorf Wellness was born – a sanctuary of empowerment and renewal where I guide individuals to nurture their well-being and reclaim agency over their lives.
For the past fifteen years, I’ve dedicated myself to inspiring clients to prioritize self-care to reduce stress, savor vibrant health, and live a conscious life of joy and meaning. Whether leading intimate groups or offering personalized guidance, my approach is infused with warmth, compassion, and a zest for life. Clients find comfort in my gentle presence, whether we’re exploring the aisles of a grocery store, whipping up a healthy recipe, or breathing together to reduce stress..
My proudest achievement lies in the legacy I’ve imparted to my three adult daughters. Through my modeling of wellness practices such as daily meditation, eating in a way that honors my body’s needs, sleeping 8-9 hours a night, and moving my body (yoga, weight training, walking) in a way that feels good, they’ve learned that wellness and resilience is not inherited but cultivated. And that by creating empowering habits, prioritizing their well-being, they hold the key to endless possibilities.
Training and knowledge matter of course, but beyond that what do you think matters most in terms of succeeding in your field?
One of the most helpful skills for succeeding as a health and wellness coach is listening actively with an open heart. This approach entails being present without judgement or preconceived notions, while not focusing on what to say next. This cultivated skill allows the client to feel seen and validated while building deeper connections. It develops trust and helps the client feel understood. When practicing active listening, we often notice subtle nuances, and emotions of non-verbal cues that may go unnoticed. Valuable insight is gleaned with this unique skill as I help clients uncover obstacles so they can live a more joyful, empowered life.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
Approaching my ten-year coaching anniversary in 2020, I found myself in a beautiful rhythm of one-on-one sessions, group workshops, and in-person wellness gatherings. Connecting with clients face-to-face was deeply fulfilling, whether in my cozy home office or their own spaces. The energy fostered profound connections supporting their healing journeys.
Then, everything changed with the onset of COVID-19 in March. Suddenly, face-to-face interactions were no longer feasible, and I had to adapt swiftly. My commitment to the work I loved remained steadfast. After taking a brief hiatus to ensure my family was settled, I dove headfirst into creative problem-solving mode.
Within weeks, I had set up a Zoom account and launched multiple self-compassion groups, along with offering complimentary sessions for seniors. The stories of loneliness and fear from those vulnerable individuals was heart-wrenching. But through these virtual connections, we found comfort and strength together.
One of the groups I initiated during those challenging times has continued over the years. Two seniors and numerous other women from across the United States, still join me on Zoom for meditation and self-compassion practices. Today, I blend in-person and virtual coaching sessions, ensuring accessibility and continuity for all my clients. The journey may have taken an unexpected turn, but the essence of connection and healing remains as vibrant as ever.
