Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jen Borman. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Jen , thanks for joining us today. Risk taking is something we’re really interested in and we’d love to hear the story of a risk you’ve taken.
Opening my studio, Homewerk, during the pandemic was my biggest risk. It was a strange time for fitness, with many people still wearing masks and staying home.
On top of that, statistics show that 81% of fitness studios fail within the first year, and fewer than 50% last beyond five years. It’s one of the toughest industries to succeed in, and adding the tail end of Covid to the mix only increased the odds against me.
Despite these challenges, I believed in my vision, the quality of my workouts, and the power of the community I wanted to build.
I’m proud to say that four years later, Homewerk is thriving in my beautiful loft in German Village, and the community I cherish continues to grow.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Jen Borman, and I am the owner of Homewerk, a boutique fitness studio specializing in strength training.
My journey began in 2019 when I transitioned out of the fashion industry. Over the years, I worked with several brands, with my last role being at BCBGMaxAzria. The job required intense travel—so much that TSA agents at the airport knew me by name. When BCBG asked me to relocate to Chicago, I had just settled in Columbus and declined the offer.
After three years of nonstop flights, hotels, and corporate trips to LA, I felt burned out and decided to pursue a career in fitness. I started by offering personal training out of my home, then expanded to teaching group fitness classes around the city. After years of personal training and teaching for other studios, I decided to open my own space where I could combine both passions.

What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
• Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
I believe in operating with honesty and authenticity, and I think that’s what sets my business apart. There’s a unique connection that forms when you’re tackling difficult things together—especially physically challenging ones. Those shared experiences create bonds, and those bonds turn into friendships. At Homewerk, we genuinely care about one another, and that’s what makes our community so strong. I’m lucky to say that every person who walks through my doors is someone I’d happily grab coffee with.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
When I first opened Homewerk, my son, Fett, was barely 2 years old. Balancing the roles of being a good mom and a business owner was incredibly challenging, and I often felt like I was falling short in one area or another. Fortunately, I had the support of my husband, Jay, who is an incredibly hands-on dad, and my in-laws, who were always eager to help. It truly takes a village.
