We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jen Betts a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Jen , thanks for joining us today. Along with taking care of clients, taking care of our team is one of the most important things we can do as leaders. Looking back on your journey, did you have a boss that was really great? Maybe you can tell us about that boss and what made them a wonderful person to work for?

My Father! He said, ” Believe in yourself Jen, You can be all. Finish School, do not get distracted.”

I studied Nursing. Became a Nurse Practitioner.
I studied my social skills. Became a Publicist.
I loved humans and understood critical thinking. I am an Entrepreneur.

My dad gave me all the advice I needed. He is his own boss, I wanted to be who he was to others.

Yes!

During my Masters in Nursing, and going out in LA…. I was introduced to the world of PR! I will give credit where credit is due! Fingerprint Communications became my University of PR. I graduated with two degrees; Nursing and Communications. I have two careers to date. People always say, ” How?”; ” No Way, how do you do both?”, or ” You are going to have to choose one or the other.”, I giggle because my careers actually compliment one another.

I feel that aiding a patient, or tending to a client is similar- either way it works, and I am doing both- happily!

How did it scale to where it was today? What were some of the key milestones?

I believe that when you come from a loyal,loving, and tenacious family the Nursing Career was inevitable. However, it takes a certain few. Those who become nurses, let alone Nurse Practitioners need to have thick skin, a big heart, and courage. Really these characteristics are exactly what you need to be a publicist. I am never going to say that I am someone who scaled! Maybe i had at one point; but success has no titles… only goals. Today, daily, I keep thinking I am just another intern, and I plan to prove. I really see no other way. It is all I know, and if I lose site of that, then it is time to sit in my position and rest. My Milestones are if I beat myself in results from the next project to client, etc. I need to beat my performance of greatness and results.
