We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jel Martinez a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jel, appreciate you joining us today. If you could go back in time do you wish you had started your creative career sooner or later?
I feel that if I would of started sooner as far as seeking representation through a gallery I would be farther along in my career. I started to create art at a very young age as a graffiti writer in Miami,Florida in the late 80’s. I also can say I have mixed feelings because if I did start sooner many aspects of my current life would most probably be different. I can honestly say that I am happy about the path I am on at the current time. I do believe that everything comes at its given time.
Jel, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am an artist from Miami,Fl. My love for art started at a very young age through graffiti. I then moved on to creating paintings that replicate the city walls. I focus on texture, graffiti removal and deterioration which is seen in our surroundings. I use materials such as canvas, gesso, acrylics, oils and inks. I think my latest works which I refer to as the peel provide a closer look at the distress process of the walls really giving the viewer a different feel. My paintings are vibrant, illuminating and provide a burst of color which make them very appealing to their audience.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
For me I can say the most rewarding aspect is when I know that my painting is in a new home providing people and their family an amazing feeling everyday. They are part of a place where memories are created daily.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
I think that my biggest mission at this particular moment is to be able to show more of the world my art in person. I think that my paintings look great on image but they are paintings that create a whole different feeling when seen in person.
