We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jeh $inatra. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jeh below.
Alright, Jeh thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s jump back to the first dollar you earned as a creative? What can you share with us about how it happened?
As it is always exciting to generate any kind of revenue from your creative works, I was fortunate enough to be able to perform for a live crowd and get paid for it. What made it even more rewarding was it was our first ever indie label showcase we put on for the city. One of myself closest friends/colleague who’s an event promoter reached out to us about doing a showcase highlighting the talent on our label and a bunch of other creatives that were close to us in the collaboration process. It was a packed show with lots of great vibes, energy and talent. The show turned a profit and we were able to make money entertaining the audience doing what we love. No greater feeling than that if you ask me. The Broken Hearts Music Group label showcase was a huge success! I felt accomplished and proud that we were able to put on such an amazing show, even flew one of our artists from Dallas TX to perform.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
The story of how I got into music starts back in 2008 when we older brother asked me to rap on one of his records, jokingly I did it but he was impressed with what he heard. From there I began writing…few songs and projects later now we’re here. I’m a creator, a creative but I’m a true Hip-Hop artist first before everything else. Most of my audience would consider my music to be “conscious” hip-hop sense it leans more to the lyrical side with realistic relatable content. I take my craft serious in the sense of looking to better myself with each release. I currently have 3 albums, 5-6 singles, 1 mixtape and a ton of features under my belt at the moment so for the past 10+ years it’s safe to say I’ve done a lot and I’m truly grateful everyday to have lasted this long…I’m proud of that being in an industry where acts are here today and gone tomorrow relatively quick..
What I want the world to know about my craft is I’m an artist [not a rapper] so I can’t be put into a rapper box because I offer more than just a hit song or catchy tune. I consider the notepad to be my canvas and my lyrics are the paint. Conveying a message with meaning and feeling is my only goal with creating music. That’s what defines timeless music timeless art.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Changing the culture I thrive in with my music and creating timeless music. Music that supersedes the boundaries of time and can be played years from now. My goal, to some may be far fetched, but I come from an era where lyrics mattered. Content mattered and I just want to bring that back while making the best music I possibly can. I’m not driven by money or fame, I’m driven by passion for true artistry, the type that lasts for years and years to come. We can continue to water down the music but the end result will be a lack of true genuine responsibility we creatives have to put out meaningful work. I’m not the savior for Hip-Hop but I’ll continue to be an ambassador for all aspiring independent creators.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
My best advice for those looking to support independent creators is really support them in all their endeavors whether it be music, art, photography, etc. I live by this sharing your friends music or their photography or their videos on YouTube cost literally nothing to you which to me is the best part of all.
Free support whether it be through word of mouth or just sharing a music link can really go a long way and if more people understood that the independent creative ecosystem would thrive tremendously. Support small businesses and smaller creatives that aren’t mainstream you’ll feel good when you do.
