We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jeffrey Johnson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jeffrey, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Let’s talk legacy – what sort of legacy do you hope to build?
that’s a funny question. because, truth told, it’s out of my hands what people might say.
I would hope that people see me & my work as a guy who was trying to be true to his gifts, yet took the time to “stop & smell the roses”, as it were. I would hope that people saw a guy who was trying to lead a creative, artful life, but be a decent human being first & foremost. I would hope that I was a positive influence for trying to lead by example, even if nobody is going to accuse me of being the most ambitious fella in the world.
I’ve been able to maintain a good balance of work & play. feets don’t fail me now…

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am an:
-actor by trade.
-musician by inspiration.
-writer/producer by the seat of my pants.
-brother/son by the grace of God.
-philosopher by whisky.
-friend by chance.
-animal Lover by necesity.
-collaborator by luck.
I am so very Grateful for all the beautiful things & people in my life.
I also fancy myself fun at parties…

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
I wouldn’t want to be TOO specific about this & call anyone out, but I did have a teacher back when I was young enough not to know what I’d do with my life, which direction I would go. but I was hoping to get deeper into the arts. this teacher was a real stiff shirt. not nearly as “freeing” as I feel a teacher could be; (certainly in the arts, anyway.) so rigid.
& I was so impressionable at the time. I hadn’t had much education yet.
I am still, all these years later, unlearning from some of their B.S.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
I think my answer to that is right there in the question: “creating art”!
that’s never a waste of time. feeding the soul, feeding the heart. and that is NOT to say I don’t fail as much as I succeed. I fail constantly. I’ll probably fail at something later tonite. that doesn’t mean I’m ready to stop trying.
I know it’s become a cliche, but “it’s the journey not the destination”. I truly believe that.
