We were lucky to catch up with Jeffery Evans recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jeffery, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Let’s start with education – we’d love to hear your thoughts about how we can better prepare students for a more fulfilling life and career.
I think the biggest short coming in the educational system is that they don’t teach students to think, they don’t teach them to figure things out. And, there is a variety of things they don’t even cover, such as financial literacy. I went into the Army right out of college, however, I had never bought a car, or even had a bank account. I wasn’t taught any of this in high school or college. I see people playing games and watching videos all day on lap tops or phones. People need to embrace the internet as a tool and learning device. Further, people are told that college is the best option, usually over trade school, however, it’s possible to do both, this is rarely advocated, I often enlighten my students to the option of concurrent enrollment, which allows students to attend college/university classes while still in high school. What is less known is that they may take trade/vocational classes instead of academic classes. thus having a more well rounded education. That, in a nutshell, is my take on the modern educational system.

Jeffery, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Presently I am concentrating on writing and making videos. I have published a book – Modern Gothic by Jeffery Evans. It’s available on several platforms. My work so far is just for entertainment purpose, but I do plan to branch into other avenues of more relevant subject matter, including a non-fiction book. But, my book and my videos are my main interest right now.

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
Absolutely; I had to unlearn many things. I noticed that we’re told that to be successful you have to follow a certain format. However, I noticed that all the really successful people didn’t do that. They went in a different direction and carved new paths. They invented things that hadn’t even been dreamed of before. Yet, I was still stuck in the mind set “not to think for myself”. I noticed many times that the given way of doing something isn’t always the best way of doing it.
On the other hand, I don’t “throw the baby out with the bath water” so to speak, I listen to whatever the current ideas are on whatever I’m dealing with but I don’t take it on blind faith that it’s the only way to do it. Many times I’ve had to think outside the box and come up with an entirely different way of solving the problem. Life isn’t simply black and white, there are gray areas. And that’s my stance on not being encumbered with traditional ways of getting the job done.

Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
There are many things I wish I had had access to when I was younger. For example, the internet, it’s a tool and a teacher. I often use You Tube videos as instructional aids. I can learn about anything I want, or look up any information I want. I think this resource is invaluable yet most people don’t take advantage of it’s true potential.
