Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jeffery Bolte. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Jeffery, appreciate you joining us today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
I produce and DJ electronic music using Ableton Live and Rekordbox DJ. This began years ago as many people do- just tinkering on Garage Band. I have played piano my entire life but despite extensive music experience, my productions were… we’ll call them “experimental”. I was looking into buying a powerful DAW to get more from my productions and after discussing with my producer buddy Barret, he convinced me to go with Ableton. My sneaky girlfriend had been monitoring this situation and for my birthday, she just emailed me a new Ableton Live Pro account (keeper). Then, I went down to Austin where Barret lives for a weekend and spent 8 hours in his recording studio learning the ropes! He probably saved me 2 years of tinkering by myself with this 8 hour masterclass. Since then I’ve been obsessed and have been largely taught by youtube and experimentation.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’ve always been a musician! since I was 4 I was playing keys, and from ages 4-13 I was an internationally competitive youth pianist. I picked up life music performance and production in 2020 when I founded a band with lead singer Wellington James (the band is called Fools Errand Music, currently going through a rebrand though so we will not be called Fools Errand for long), and concurrently picked up music production. From then, I produced dozens of songs and eventually got good enough to start posting stuff on Spotify and performing my songs live. Check my work out @ Hyppocratic on all streaming platforms.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
I feel like myself when I am engaging with music. I am my best in all areas of my life when I get to think musically and creatively. I am better at school, work, in the gym, and in my close relationships. Music is how i learned to interact with the world when I was young, and when I am dedicating time and energy towards it, I always come away rejuvenated and better for it.
Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
The youtube video “The Art of Mixing” changed the way I interact with sound permanently. It eloquently describes a way of thinking about how sound is heard and processed by the human brain in a 3 dimensional space. I highly recommend it for all producers and mix engineers.
