Innovation Through REACH Pathways: Empowering the Next Generation
Innovation is often portrayed as the domain of tech titans, but for me, it has always been about solving real-world challenges for the communities I serve. One of the most impactful innovations in my career is the creation of REACH Pathways. This AI-powered ed-tech platform connects underrepresented students with career pathways, mentors, and resources to ensure their long-term success.
The idea for REACH Pathways was born out of my work as CEO of Chicago Scholars, where I witnessed firsthand the challenges faced by first-generation and low-income students. These students often lacked access to career networks, job opportunities, and mentors who could guide them beyond graduation. I realized that solving this problem required a scalable and personalized approach—qualities that traditional methods could not fully deliver.
REACH Pathways leverages artificial intelligence to serve as a virtual career mentor, connect students with internships, and provide near-peer-created career resources based on their interests, skills, and goals. This is not just a static platform but a dynamic system that grows with the student, offering real-time insights and guidance as they navigate their professional journeys. What makes REACH Pathways particularly innovative is its ability to bridge gaps in opportunity while also using data to advocate for systemic changes in hiring practices and corporate strategy.
Since its inception, the platform has gained national attention, including winning the SXSW Global Pitch competition in 2023. It was also recognized as a Black Ambition finalist and a Chicago Innovation Award winner in 2024. These accolades are not just personal milestones but validations of the impact REACH Pathways is making. More importantly, the platform has already connected thousands of students with life-changing opportunities, proving that innovation is most potent when it’s used to create equity.
To me, innovation is about something other than flashy technology or billion-dollar valuations, although we hope to get to unicorn status one day. It’s about listening to the needs of those you serve, leveraging resources creatively, and building solutions that create lasting change. With REACH Pathways, I’m proud to say we’re doing just that.

Jeffery, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am Jeffery Beckham Jr., an artist, entrepreneur, and community leader passionate about creating opportunities and empowering individuals through education, equity, and creativity. My journey into the arts and nonprofit leadership is rooted in my commitment to uplifting communities and telling stories that inspire and connect people. As CEO of Chicago Scholars and Co-CEO of REACH Pathways, I have dedicated my career to helping underrepresented students navigate the pathways to higher education and meaningful careers. Simultaneously, as an artist, I use my work to celebrate culture, identity, and resilience.
My journey began in the Auburn Gresham community of Chicago, where I saw both the struggles and the strength of underrepresented communities. This inspired me to find ways to amplify voices and create tangible change. In the nonprofit sector, I lead initiatives that have helped over 10,000 students secure more than $700 million in merit aid and access to prestigious colleges and universities. With REACH Pathways, my team and I have built an AI-powered tool that bridges the gap between education and career opportunities, creating equitable solutions for underrepresented youth.
In the arts, my creative works are vibrant, evocative paintings that celebrate Black identity, culture, and history. My pieces have been recognized nationally, and my last art show sold out, testament to how my work resonates with audiences. As an artist, I aim to spark dialogue, celebrate diversity, and inspire hope through every brushstroke. What sets me apart is my ability to weave my leadership in social impact with my creative vision, offering a holistic approach to empowering individuals and communities.
What I’m most proud of is the tangible impact my work has had—whether it’s a student achieving their dream of attending college, a young professional finding their path through REACH Pathways, or an art collector finding inspiration in one of my paintings. My brand represents purpose-driven work, whether through education, technology, or art. To my followers, clients, and supporters, I want you to know that everything I create—be it programs, tools, or artworks—is deeply rooted in my passion for equity, creativity, and the belief that everyone deserves the chance to reach their full potential.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Resilience is a defining part of my journey, and one of the most profound examples stems from an incident that occurred on March 23, 2022. That day, I was the victim of an attempted carjacking—a traumatic event that temporarily cost me sight in one eye. The physical and emotional challenges that followed could have easily derailed me, but they became a catalyst for transformation.
During my recovery, I found myself reflecting deeply on how I viewed the world and how I could use my experience to inspire change. This moment of introspection led me to channel my pain and determination into my art and leadership. I began creating a series of paintings—12 of my most popular pieces—that reimagined my perspective, focusing on themes of resilience, identity, and hope. These works resonated with audiences in powerful ways, as they were born from a place of raw vulnerability and unyielding strength.
Simultaneously, I used this renewed vision to amplify my work at Chicago Scholars, leading to the development of REACH Pathways, an innovative ed-tech platform. The platform addresses systemic inequities by connecting underrepresented students with career pathways, mentors, and opportunities to thrive. Additionally, I launched the Young Men of Color Affinity Program to provide a safe space for Black and Brown boys to explore their identities and build community.
This chapter of my life taught me that resilience isn’t just about surviving adversity—it’s about transforming it into fuel for growth and impact. Through art, leadership, and innovation, I’ve turned one of my darkest moments into a source of light for others. That experience reminds me that even in the face of life’s most challenging obstacles, we all have the power to rebuild, reimagine, and rise stronger.

Any advice for managing a team?
Managing a team and maintaining high morale starts with fostering a culture of trust, communication, and purpose. As a leader, it’s essential to understand and appreciate each team member’s strengths, challenges, and aspirations. Take time to listen actively and ensure that everyone feels seen and valued. When team members trust their leader and each other, they are more likely to collaborate effectively and stay motivated. Transparency in decision-making and authenticity in leadership also go a long way in creating an environment where people feel secure and engaged.
Another key element is celebrating successes and supporting growth. Recognition—whether it’s a public shout-out, a note of gratitude, or team-wide acknowledgment—boosts confidence and reinforces a sense of accomplishment. Pair this with opportunities for professional development, such as training or mentorship, to show your investment in their long-term success. Finally, prioritize balance and well-being by modeling and encouraging a healthy work-life balance. When team members feel supported, valued, and connected to the mission, morale remains high, and the team is likelier to thrive.
