We recently connected with Jeff Scaman and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Jeff thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What was it like going from idea to execution? Can you share some of the backstory and some of the major steps or milestones?
I met with my Co-Founders Tiffany Cooke and Brad Cooke for dinner when we decided to discuss a dual camera app. I tried to take a picture with my phone of them and myself sitting across the table but realized that it was not possible.
We decided at that point to try to develop a dual camera app that allowed simultaneous recording of both front and rear cameras on smartphones. After doing research and talking with several software developers we discovered that there were no dual cam apps available on the market and DUBL was born.
After several months of additional research and development we launched the original DUBL app on December 11, 2018.
When we came up with DUBL, the goal was to launch a new app and build a community of users as a social media app. We felt that DUBL was a unique photography app that could be used by many people for social media, but that it also had merit as an app that could be used for many other things, like a dashcam and more. So, after launching the original DUBL app, we set out to develop DUBL DRIVE, the first-ever dual camera dashcam app which we launched on the App Store in January 2020. We also filed a patent to protect the underlying technology for DUBL apps. We were very proud of the fact that not only did we launch the first dual camera app ever offered, but also the first dual camera dashcam app ever offered as well. This made us realize that what we were really building was a new technology platform, where we could offer various apps and services developed around our dual camera technology instead of just a single use app.
Since starting the company, we have been building the DUBL brand by launching three apps, a website, landing pages, additional websites, social media pages, domains and lots of graphic content including dual camera videos, pictures and multimedia content across the web. Since then, our apps have been downloaded worldwide across dozens of countries, and we continue to enjoy new downloads every day around the world.
We did have some hiccups along the way with app bugs, fixes and needed updates, but we are in the process of working on major upgrades to our entire app portfolio which we hope to launch soon. These upgrades will include highly advanced performance, new functionality, a host of exciting new features and completely new apps which we are currently developing.
We also want people to know that DUBL values privacy and we are proud of the fact our apps record and store the video and pictures right on the user’s own device, so users own and control their own data. We also want people to know that DUBL is committed to building a world-class technology platform of software, apps, and related services, and that we will strive to create and offer the best possible products and services that we can develop. We are always open to suggestions from our users, and we welcome any input from the community that will help us to complete a full-service technology platform that people will enjoy and want to use on a regular basis.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I have been an entrepreneur for most of my adult life and I’m always looking for the next big thing to work on. My previous endeavor led me down the road of video recording and technology related to the internet, since it was recently becoming known to the public and people started using it widely. This was the late 1990’s and I started to learn about many things related to the internet, video processing and intellectual property. As an inventor I had done years of research on patents and trademarks and was “named inventor” on three patents, and I had several trademarks and registered trademarks for inventions I was involved with. In fact, I met my business partner Tiffany Cooke on a patent infringement trial I was involved with prior to launching DUBL. So, when the idea for DUBL came up I felt like we collectively had enough technical knowledge and intellectual property expertise to start a company and launch a new type of app.
How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
DUBL is funded by the three original Founders, Jeff Scaman, Tiffany Cooke and Brad Cooke, along with other founders who are among friends and family. We were able to raise enough money to start the company, develop three apps, get two patents filed, and build DUBL into a solid recognizable brand with two registered trademarks, website, App Store and Google Play landing pages, several domains, and lots of video and photographic content.
We are currently involved with another fundraising campaign now, which we hope to use to further the development of DUBL into a world-class technology platform servicing millions of users around the world.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Unfortunately, in early 2020 just as were getting started with our marketing campaign the world was struck with the Covid pandemic. This was a serious setback for DUBL because we were raising capital and needed to get out into the world to meet with investors, shoot videos and generally run the business. Since everything was restricted, this was a huge burden on the company and definitely slowed down our progress. We also had a patent pending during the Covid timeframe and this slowed down that process as well. Now that the pandemic has passed, we had our first patent issue, and we are back up to speed and hope to have some huge developments to report in the coming months.
