We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jeff Lam a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Jeff, thanks for joining us today. Let’s start with what makes profitability in your industry a challenge – what would you say is the biggest challenge?
I think being in Hollywood the biggest misconception of what everyone sees is the glamour, fame and money. When in reality we’re working just as hard as everyone else. From a person working as a waiter or waitress, to an accountant. We are all working to feed our families and survive.
Jeff, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I started off as an actor. Trust me when I say, “It’s not all that it cracked up to be.” It’s a constant grind and mind F pardon my French. Rejection and constantly working odd jobs to afford rent and food. But now I’m a producer for 3 tv shows. It’s been a journey. My advise. Never give up on your dreams, but always be ready to Pivot.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
When I first moved to LA. I had so many creditors after me that eventually I had to file for bankruptcy. Talk about 7 years of bad luck. But with that set back, it gave me a fresh new start. I was able to bounce back and become financially stable. Giving me the piece of mind to continue to pursue my dreams.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
As I said earlier I was an actor. Within 4 years I was able to make a small name for myself, but ultimately with age, you realize that what you thought was your dream, pivots to something even more enjoyable. Producing behind the scenes, having a sense of control of your career. To develop, put it together and see your story come to life. It’s the most satisfying feeling ever.
