Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jeff Burris. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Jeff, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Looking back, do you think you started your business at the right time? Do you wish you had started sooner or later
As a kid at 5 years old, I always wanted to be a radio DJ…until I found out how much they make. My first experience with music was WABB (the wabbit) in Florida. I listened to music almost non-stop and knew that I loved music and every aspect of the art. I went to a few of the radio station meet and greets and fell in love with that lifestyle.
I was in band throughout most of my school years and I loved it. After high school, I decided to abandon playing music and start my career waiting tables. Little did I know that my career would lead me right back to the DJ industry. I worked in the restaurant industry for around 20 years before landing a job at a sports bar in Addison, TX. I had a friend who worked at the restaurant who was a DJ, and I asked him if I could follow him around on a couple of events to see what it was like. He told me that he actually needed an assistant, and that he would pay me to help him out. I followed him around for 1 1/2 years as his assistant before I was hired on to a large DJ company in Dallas that was just starting up. I worked as an office manager and DJ for 2 1/2 years with them before deciding to branch off on my own. It was a big risk, and I didn’t have a backup plan if it didn’t work, but it was the best decision that I had ever made.
Unfortunately, when I finally started my own business I was in my late 30’s. I am no “spring chicken” anymore and moving and lifting the equipment is a harder task than it would have been when I was younger. I still love my job and eventually I will hire someone to help me with the lifting and the more physical aspects of the job.
I look back on my career, and I have owned my company for almost 10 years now, and I really wish that I had started the company in my younger years. I believe that if I had started sooner that I would have more knowledge, talent, and a larger client base than what I have now. I would be very happy to have a wedding to DJ every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday because I enjoy my job that much. It is a competitive industry, but one that is very supportive offering help to other DJs. I only hope that I can offer that knowledge to future upcoming DJs.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Jeff Burris (otherwise knows as DJ TWYNZ because I have twin daughters). I was given my DJ name by other DJs in the industry, but I prefer to just use my name in the wedding event industry. I got in to the industry with help from a friend who was in the industry already. I provide DJ services, lighting, and some planning for clients. I try to cover every aspect of details from what color tie to wear (to match the decor), who is giving toasts, what order will they toast, what are you using for the final sendoff, etc. I like to know what clients really want to hear and what they don’t want to hear. I can normally fill in any musical gaps with their crowd requests. I try to go above and beyond for every client. If I see them looking at the catering table, I will normally ask them what they need and I can take care of it for them. The wedding day is for a brid and groom to relax, spend time with family and friends and enjoy their day. Don’t worry about the little items. Something goes wrong at every wedding, but that’s what you hire your professionals to take care of.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
I try to treat my clients the way that I would like to be treated and better. Customer service is number 1 in the wedding industry. The client isn’t always right, but it is their day.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
The best source of new clients for me has been referrals. 90% of my business has either come from previous clients or venues that refer my company. It has been a blessing that my clients enjoy my services that much.
