Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jeannie Guzman. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Jeannie, thanks for joining us today. Let’s jump into the story of starting your own firm – what should we know?
I started my own firm almost on accident. My daughter was 3 and I had decided to stay home with her. Both of us found out pretty early that staying home just wasn’t fum for either or us. So she went to a part time preschool while I started grad school to get my Masters in Accounting. I had taken a job at a small firm learning taxes, and that turned into the firm owner encouraging me to do some bookkeeping for small businesses. So I started my own little firm, where I worked with local small businesses doing QuickBooks and payroll. Back then, it was a lot less tech! I would travel and work at their office, or swap a folder back and forth with receipts and reports each month. My advice for a young professional is definitely network. After many years I learned that the best business relationships come from getting to know people. Also now there are so many online opportunities, that you can network all over the country or even the world if you want to.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I got into my industry while I was in college, and I started to work at a bank. I realized quickly I had a knack for numbers. I was actually going to school to be a music teacher. Where I lived at the time, Long Island, NY, the field was very competitive. I realized I had better have a back up. Since I loved numbers, and I was good at it, I switched to accounting. Over the years I have worked with many types of small businesses. I also have a heart for non-profits, which is a niche I love working with! Non-profits have a lot of specific things that they need for compliance, and I love helping those who help others. In addition to accounting services, I have also began an online business where I coach women entrepreneurs how to be calm and organized with their finances. After years of working as an accountant businesses, I realized that true financial peace isn’t just about spreadsheets and budgets, it’s about confidence, clarity, and trust in yourself.
Through mysignature approach that blends practical systems with gentle guidance, I empower women to simplify their finances, feel in control, and create lasting calm with money. My work is grounded in compassion and clarity, helping women build confidence not just in their numbers, but in themselves. I founded Her Money System based on these principles.
I am different because I draw on decades of hands-on experience and I blend practical financial know-how with a compassionate, down-to-earth approach that makes money feel less intimidating and more empowering.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I had just started my business, and my daughter was 4 years old. My husband at the time and I had decided to divorce. It was a mutually good decision, except he decided he wanted to leave the state and not support his daughter. I was always resilient, and at the time, I knew what I needed to do. I had to go back to work. I needed insurance and my business just want bringing in the revenue yet to support her and I. I was doing personal bookkeeping for a woman who owned a large company, so I asked her if I could work on her accounting team. Sure enough, she hired me. I kept my business on the side, and took the position. I was still in graduate school, had a 4 year old, a job and a business, all on my own. I ended up getting more and more clients through word of mouth, so just a couple of years later, I was able to go back to my firm full time and pay for the insurance and keep giving my daughter the life she deserved. This was a journey that sometimes I look back and think, wow how did I ever get through that? Resilience!

Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
The most effective strategy for building my clientele is keeping the current clientele happy! I learned long ago that your best marketing is a happy customer. Most of my accounting clients have come from word of mouth, and that is by far the best (and free) marketing you can have!
