We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jeanne McCoy a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jeanne, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today The more we talk about good leadership the more we think good leadership practices will spread and so we’d love for you to tell us a story about the best boss you’ve had and what they were like or what they did that was so great?
I had the opportunity to work with the late Horst Rechelbacher. He was the founder of Aveda and driving force in the clean beauty movement.
He had a profound impact on my personal and professional growth. I was constantly learning! I was engaged in new ideas regarding product development, industry education and the salon. I had previously worked at a commission salon, so the training wheels came off when entering into working with a pioneer in the industry.
Jeanne, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I went into the industry with a tremendous amount of passion and drive. I attended Aveda in the early 2000’s because I loved the idea of a more conscious minded product and lifestyle. Being in the industry now for 20+yrs I have been able to offer services I truly love and have crafted on requests from existing and new clients. I love the adaptability of the industry to create what clients are looking for. I am a Master Stylist and love to cut hair. My specialties include Scalp treatments and Trichology services to address scalp and hair issues, I also am an Oncology trained stylist that works with cancer patients during or after treatments. I love helping our next generations as well, I am affiliate salon for Wigs for Kids, kids can come in for wig measurements and can return for a complimentary haircut when the wig arrives. I am constantly evolving as a beauty professional and business owner, I always look to the future and think big!
Have you ever had to pivot?
I wanted to travel around the world and do hair as an editorial hairstylist. I was loving life then I received a cancer diagnosis in 2005. After returning to the salon after treatment, I couldn’t be around the aroma of hair color. It made be sick along with hairsprays. I was devastated. I loved my job. That is when I left the only salon family I had known, and interviewed with Horst Rechelbacher. He was embarking on creating an edible hair care line, and I couldn’t wait to see what he would do!
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
My intuition has always guided me through tough situations. Being resilient for me means showing up and doing your best even though it may take prayers, meditation, movement and coffee to get there. Establishing as many good habits for my mind, body and soul has helped me sustain balance during difficult times.
