We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jeanne Jones. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jeanne below.
Hi Jeanne , thanks for joining us today. Do you wish you had waited to pursue your creative career or do you wish you had started sooner?
I believe that my creative career happened at just the right time. I was not ready to fully embrace the time that I needed to study and perfect my skills until I was in my 50″s. All of the life experiences that have come before deeply enriched my ability to create work that is true to me.

Jeanne , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Creativity has always been part of my life. Only after sending my son off to college did I devote myself to studying art at The Glassell School of Art, MFAH. Being dedicated to improving my skills and following my passion was the impetus to becoming a full time artist. My work is inspired by the natural world and my need to be surrounded by plants and flowers. Just the presence of these in my studio spurs me to create. As I engage with plants, I create paintings and ceramic installations that abstract nature but allow the viewer to recognize forms blurring the line between abstraction and realism. I like to think outside the box as far as what materials can be combined which led me to create mixed media works on canvas, board and linen panel that contain ceramics, screen prints, textiles even dried skins from my palette within my acrylic paintings . I am never satisfied to stop pushing boundaries to achieve art that excites me. I strive to make work that is unique and true to my ideas of color, balance and composition. Most recently, I organized and curated a solo show titled ‘COLOR BED’ in Houston, Tx. The concept and title had been rolling around in my head for years and when the opportunity became available for a space I went for it wholeheartedly. It was a dream fulfilled that I had made all decisions to present both my ceramic installation and paintings together within the exhibition – a celebration of nature’s profound influence on my artistic journey.

Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
When I create I immerse myself in the process and let go of other practical concerns. The hours fly by while I make my ideas come to life. This process is rewarding but stressful when you realize you are solely responsible for the product you sell and must market. I struggle to find time for the business side of art. I don’t think I’m alone in this struggle.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The rewards of being an artist are two fold. The obvious answer – doing what you love and following your passion. The second reward which I wasn’t expecting is bringing joy to people who connect with your art and want to have it in their home.
