We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jeanna Ross. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jeanna below.
Alright, Jeanna thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Innovation comes in all shapes, sizes and across all industries, so we’d love to hear about something you’ve done that you feel was particularly innovative.
Shortly after moving to Missouri I got the opportunity to redesign a nightclub in St. Louis. I’ve designed sets perviously for music videos as well as have an understanding of color and space but this was a new venture for me. This nightclub had good bones and they had an idea of wanting to create something that felt more modern but also up scale. They had a 4,000 sq. ft. inside, with another 2,500 sq. ft. of brick-lined patio. Starting with discussing their logo, colors and budget I started creating vector renderings to be able to show them all the ideas I had. We created a new entrance look for the front with foliage, created some selfie areas, created 4 custom neons, installed an 8ft mirror, painted most of the inside, frosted the windows and got wireless color controlled lights throughout the whole space inside and out. This job really allowed me to learn a lot about design, materials and my new love for designing spaces.

Jeanna, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I remember watching tons of music videos as I grew up before school on both MTV and VH1 and that inspired my to want to make music videos. Fast forward and now I’m creating music videos, covering live events and festivals and creating all types of content. My company Miss-n-Scene is a play on words of the term Mise-en-scène which is a classic film term to describe everything in front of the lens. I moved to LA right out of college for 10 years and really got my career started. I create short form content for all types of clients all over the US and overseas. Some notable clients I’ve worked with are ADIDAS, Insomniac Productions/Live Nation, The Voice, Jeeter, NBC and many more. I excel in my ability to adapt to all types of situations, stay cool under pressure and always come with an amazing final product. Outside of just creating videos and photos, I design background visuals for shows, paint, design spaces and anything creative.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
After college in Missouri, I moved to Los Angeles to start my creative career with no job prospects and no family or friends out there. It was so overwhelming without connections in such a large city where everyone does what you do. However, I had tons of support from my family and friends as well as a drive to succeed. I reached out to everyone I could think of via email and social media until I got a yes for an internship. From there I took that success through reaching out, I just kept going. A specific story is when I saw a Justin Timberlake music video that had tons of transitions that normally I wouldn’t like as well as it being 7 mins, which is long for my short attention span but I watched it a million times in a row because the editing was just phenomenal. I looked up the production company and found who the editor was and just cold DM’d her on facebook and to my surprise she asked me to come to her edit bay later that week. I always tell people to contact ANYONE they want to meet because you honestly never know what can happen, maybe not tomorrow but you have to take the first steps to put yourself in the position you want to be in.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative is having a happy client. There’s nothing better than creating something for someone who loves it.
